Hi! How difficult is it to transition from a fintech PM-T to FAANG PM-T? I am starting to look but having no luck in getting the resume shortlisted by recruiters. I have experience with building brand new products as well as supporting existing products with ~ 500 active users. Update - it’s 500 customers (with an avg. 30 users) on a B2B financial services product which is less that 2 years old. Any suggestions/guidance are truly appreciated. YOE - 8 years TC. - 200k #pm #product #productmanager
Dude the 500 active users better be a typo
Too high or too low? Lol
Extremely low! Better be at least 500K
Got it! Thanks. Any suggestions on the transition itself?
Transition to a financial pm role within these companies.
Did you do anything that helped grow the number of active users? Quantify that impact in terms of percentage rather than actual numbers. Or talk about the retention impact or engagement impact.
That’s all good on a resume. But it’s going to come up in an interview right? How many users? 😬
That would be one of the first questions I would ask.
Tip - maybe work on a real website ?
I’m trying to leave a small unknown MarTech company to something with a little more recognition. I have 16 yoe total — and cutting my resume to one page was what made the difference in getting calls. I still want to find a recruiter as I had a few friends get sweet placements that way—not because the recruiter made a direct placement but because they had a recruiter friend at MAANG and passed the resume along. Good luck!
How did you do that? I have about 30 and still have 2. Thankful I have a great template.
It’s hard. Get referrals, lean on your network, where did others from your firm go? Also I think many companies are in a hiring freeze and not announcing it. Feel free to DM to chat
It was difficult for me but I transitioned from payments to e-commerce payments to generalist working on Alexa. It’s possible- just need to focus on generalist problem solving you have done that can be translated to any domain outside of fintech
How is fintech product management different from other sectors? I see product management as a skill set that can be applied to any industry.
Work with a resume writer. They will pry out the key words that is needed to get flagged for TA
Most resume writers are crap. I wasted a ton on them - the resume looked pretty, but if you read what was there it made me sound like a junior level employee - and I was a Director at the time.
Any good recommendations? I see a bunch that put things in a pretty package but are junior PMs themselves or a non-tech professional.
Move to Canada and recruit from there. Come back after 1-2 years. A lot of FAANG and equivalent are recruiting there.
How’s the competition in Canada?
More demand less supply - at least now
500? Or 500 million?
500! For now.. it’s growing.
I’m thinking Moodys Products are geared towards corporate finance customers, so 500 is a reasonable number. Are those internal clients, using an internal platform?
