I’m currently a SWE at JPMC but am thinking of making a transition to PM at JPMC. Does anyone here who works at chase know how it is being a PM there? Also, is the pay the same as SWE if I were to switch? I’m afraid my pay will go down if I switch. I have about 2 yoe
On my team SWE and PMs get paid similarly but we are probably exceptions since we have more control over the compensation then generally
Pm is getting saturated day by day. Not a easy way to break. You could be stuck on same salary for long in career with increase in job security. Where as for swe you could be earning much more and easier to climb up the ladder 🪜. I know a lot of folks who made the switch and are so frustrated and getting back to swe job. A lot more of talking and working hard with probability of success depending on customers and product. Not on you and you still being responsible for all of it :)
Are you currently in product and also one of those people that switched from SWE? Are there no raises for product at chase? I feel like being a SWE at chase isn’t that great salary/raise wise
Switch. Product Manager salary reaches a saturation. If I had been you. I will be software engineer for few years .try for faang . Earn 250k or 300 as senior software engineer. And then become software engineer manager or software development manager ( with people management role . Managing software dev projects) - this position will make you earn 500k . Why would anyone who could code and shine in swe will leave such ambitious path? And become pm with where you never manage people and end up saturating at 130-150k that too. Faang pm is 5 or 8+ yrs of " product experience" and still paying them 200 . Where as on em you could be 500k
The pay will definitely go down. Why do you want to downgrade? If you like to be a PM then go for it regardless of low pay. Staying happy is more important.
Do you currently work for Microsoft or JPMC? I am thinking of PM because I feel like I would enjoy much more than SWE. Am aware of salary, but seeing if it is worth it. I’ve been trying to apply for Microsoft PM roles but cannot ever get an interview with them even though it seems like it might be the only company that encourages people with SWE experience to apply
What is the enticing change you want? It’s a very different type of work
