Renting in both. Lets say rent in seattle is 2k and in nyc 2.5k what would you equate 175k in seattle to ??? in nyc to be?
U would pay 8% tax to ny and 3.4% on top to NYC on top of fed taxes, then sales tax is close to 9%. Do the math, oh takeout and cooked food a wooping 12% tax (restaurant tax for the tourists), unless you buy your own ingredients to cook.
This is inaccurate. Tax on cooked food at restaurants or takeout in NYC is considered sales tax, 8.875%. This is actually lower than Seattle’s sales tax of 10.1%. Income tax is progressive and those rates can’t be calculated directly. Use an online tool to easily calculate your income tax based on where you live, I like: https://smartasset.com/taxes/income-taxes. Keep in mind if you live anywhere outside the 5 boroughs of NYC (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island) you’re not paying local city income tax. Many folks combat this by living in neighboring parts of NJ, or in Westchester or Long Island if you’re looking for something more suburban. Given that you’re looking to rent property tax shouldn’t be of concern.
U talking to me or op? Who the hell wants to burry themselves in long island unless it's for rentech? I inflated the numbers on purpose. Enough people here already!

Not sure what your expectation of a living situation is but 2.5k won’t get you very far in nyc. Like you probably won’t have a dishwasher, washer, dryer in unit .... and it’s probably a studio... unless you go farther out from manhattan
What about 3k for a decent studio?
At Brooklyn or LIC at best

There would be a difference in taxes. Nyc: you have to pay city and state taxes apart from federal Seattle: no state or city You should consider more than just the rent adjustment here. I’d guess around 200-210k
So 210k is about the same as 175k in Seattle?
