https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-administration-announces-overhaul-of-h-1b-visa-program-11602017434 What do all the immigrant and would-be immigrant folks here think of this? It seems like a sensible move to me. #h1b @immigration
It's a good move. Will cut down on visa abuse. Many Indians stuck in GC backlog will get a GC sooner. A few others who fall below the benchmark will have to return. Seems fair enough.
It is really a bad idea for US jobs ; these jobs are just going to go to remote cheaper countries, with advent of COVID freelancers in India saw almost 2 times increase in business , pretty sure this will take the same route . It was a good move 5 years ago !
Probably the shitty consultancies will start outsourcing because they no longer can afford h1b workers. Which is good. But still there are a lot of companies that can afford h1bs with the new salary brackets. The only caveat of this change is that small/mid level companies will no longer be able to get international talent for them. The 85,000 slots will definitely get filled every year what so ever.
I love these changes. They should be a bit more stringent if possible in the future. H1b is actually quite abused and many competent people haven't been able to get through. Keeps innovation out of this country and keeps mediocre workers in. Also great to see equally stringent changes for perm. I sincerely hope the h1b applications from shitty consultancies and IT chop shops take a nosedive next year.
I agree. Dems would never tackle H1B abuse and will keep blocking S386. Trump is fixing it such that S386 won't even be needed.
Well, the way pay levels have been decided it will be really difficult for new grads to get h1b, you might be lucky if you are in google ...
The only thing these rules are doing is forcing major companies like amazon, google etc to hire rampantly in 🇮🇳. Checkout the new amazon headquarters in Hyderabad, India. My LinkedIn was filled with new grads with google offers from india a while back too.
Keep in mind that the US govt can easily reduce outsourcing by changing the tax laws if needed. Or incentivizing companies to keep jobs here. Expect something like this in case outsourcing increases.
Keep in mind, the companjes can incorporate outside the US and consider the US office as just a branch; thereby circumnavigating any shitty tax law.
Amazon already pays 0 Tax.
This will definitely affect the number of students coming for masters to us, h1b for new grads will become really difficult with this pay increase
what's the 47 percentile number ? 60k ?
When does it increase from 45 percentile to 95 percentile? Based on YOE?
Idk what this administration’s problem with immigrants is. Nobody chooses their birthplace
Why does paying h1bs more mean problem with immigrants? Or should help keep witch out but be better for those who are good as less people in lottery no?
Hit paywall 😕
It's all over the news. Just search.
