I’m looking for my next job opportunity in the marketing field. But here’s my story... I’ve been a little depressed lately because of the job hunting process. Don’t get me wrong - I’m super happy for everyone working at their dream company, getting their dream offer, and living their best lives. I’m all for it but can’t help myself from thinking how can I improve myself to be like each and everyone of you. I’m truly inspired by you all. Growing up I had always been an underdog and was never the best of my grade. There’s always someone better than me or achieved things much easier than me. However, I never let that stop me from striving or pushing myself further and harder. In fact, I always give my best because I feel like I have something to prove to myself. I was never the kid that has a lot of self-confident and self-esteem as well. Parents were not the best at giving compliments or praises. Therefore, it made me think that I’m never good enough, but I use that as my motivation to push myself more and work even harder! I started working at the age of 14 as a general laborer. In Univeristy, I was blessed to get into a marketing agency. Juggling both study and work were not easy, but I learned how to manage my time properly and meet and exceed job expectations. Fast forward, I graduated top of my class, but it took me 500+ job applications and 200+ rejections to land a job. Even when I have landed a full-time job, I continue to sharpen my skills and was doing a lot freelance marketing jobs for small businesses. We all know what happened last year, but I actually started my own e-commerce business that has grown dramatically. Now that businesses are slowly picking back up and more marketing positions are opening up, I want to grab this opportunity. But how can I better approach the job hunting process this time? Looking for a remote position. Work Experience at a Marketing Agency, SaaS company, small tech company, real estate company, Private Equity funds. Project and event management. Skills: Programatic Advertising, Facebook Ads, Demand Generation, Data Analysis, Product Marketing, SEO, SMM If you are willing to give me an opportunity, I’ll fight for every chance that I’m given. I’m a fighter and I’ll fight until the end. All thoughts, comments, feedback or referrals are appreciated. Make sure you aren’t focused on volume, but jobs that are an actual fit with your experience and goals — even in your list of skills above, it’s all over the place... focus on what you are really good at and WANT to do. Not saying this is your situation, but based on the volume of applications you mentioned: As a hiring manager, I can see when someone has applied to 20 jobs at my company in the past 6 months in every role from sales to marketing to product to operations. Makes me feel like they are throwing darts at a board and don’t actually have a solid set of skills.
Thank you so much for the comment and feedback! I really appreciate it. Yes, I have been focusing on applying to marketing related roles. With that said, I’m still keep my options open such as Marketing Operations and Product Marketing role because there are related. What do you think? Maybe this will explain why the skills are all over the place. A lot of time, in a marketing role, the company required you to have a lot of skills like SEO, SMM, Display, Paid Ads, SQL, basic design and many other good stuff. Over the years, I have just acquired all these skills because I never turn down an opportunity to learn and make myself better.
Don’t feel like you need to jump straight to FAANG. You can start at smaller, but well known tech companies. Twitch, Snapchat, Spotify, etc.
That’s right and I agree 100%. I’m open to those companies as well including Chime! Do you know if the company has any remote marketing role?

Invest into professional resume help to stand out. Tech companies love the hustle and starting your own successful business should be highlighted well. Network on LinkedIn and with old college friends and really anyone who’s at the companies you are aiming for. The goal is to get referred by a connection to score that first interview. After that, study up on how to ace interviews by having answers to common interview questions and lots of stories for STAR method responses.
Thank you so much for replying and the feedback! I’m confident that my current resume is good because I have had a few people reviewed it including a current FANG employe, and they really liked it! I have also started connecting with people on LinkedIn. I try to genuinely build a relationship with them instead of making it seems like I need their referrals. Stories, STAR response checked. I guess I’m just tired of the process. I’m doing what I supposed to but just a little depressed because every rejections feels like you are not worth it.
If you’re not getting a decent number of interviews from your resume, it likely needs some work. Not sure if you mean rejections are at the resume stage or at the interview stage. Just because someone works somewhere doesn’t mean their resume skills are great. They may have paid someone to do theirs well too. A certain number of rejections are normal. You won’t be a match for all. Also need to make sure you are applying to roles that match your skill set closely. And that your resume has similar keywords as those job descriptions.
