I am just wrapping up a job search and have it narrowed down to GrubHub and Chewy as my two final offers. I'm having a really difficult time deciding between the two offers. Here are the details and plusses and minuses of each for me. GrubHub: Base: $140k Equity: $160k over 4 years TC: $180k My recruiter also says they do offer performance-based equity grants every year, but they won't give me any details on that so I really can't consider it in the TC when I'm making my decision. The biggest plus of this offer for me is the reviews. Both here and on Glassdoor, the reviews are very positive and report a really good culture and work-life balance in particular. The latter of those in particular is really important to me. This would also be a fully remote job forever. I live in Minnesota so the TC is very competitive for the market here. Also of note, this was their initial offer, so I may have room to negotiate it up. I haven't tried yet. Chewy: Base: $135k Annual Bonus: 10% Equity: $40.5k over 4 years Sign-on Bonus: $20k Chewy offers a new equity grant every year of 30% of your salary that comes with its own new 4-year vesting schedule. This makes the TC a little more complicated as these vests start to stack. The TC varies by year when taking this into account: Year 1: $178k, Year 2: $168k, Year 3: $178k, Year 4: $189k From a financial standpoint, I like that this offer is more cash heavy, particularly with the sign-on bonus. I also like that this would be for a role with an office to go to after the pandemic. I miss a lot of aspects of office culture and see that as a positive. The office is literally across the street from my apartment, so the commute is as good as it gets. The biggest downside here are the reviews. Both here and Glassdoor have a lot of negative reviews, particularly around the work-life balance and some other culture issues. Even a lot of the 5* positive reviews list work-life balance as a con. I am coming off of a job with a huge work-life balance problem and really want to avoid that again. For what it's worth, I have gotten a pretty good signal through my interview process and reaching out to people on LinkedIn who currently work at Chewy, so I can't quite figure this out. What are your thoughts on these offers and how I might choose between them? Thanks!
Are you SWE? Since we started planning our merger, we stopped giving out RSU refreshers to Senior and below. However, we do have base refreshers that are usually single digit to low 10s in percentage the past 2 years as far as I know. Culture is good for the most part, so is WLB, unless you are really unlucky and land on a few specific BE teams. To elaborate, I would say a regular hard core 40 hour week is considered busy for most teams. As for culture, the bad part is perhaps the stagnant upper management, but the rest of the folks are generally pretty cool with each other and are collaborative. One of engineering managers’ key metrics is retention rate of team members, so they’ll usually try to be quite nice to you.
I forgot to list that, but both offers are for SE2. Thanks for the info. This info on refreshers is interesting as it conflicts a bit with what my recruiter is telling me. But this definitely might explain why she continues to be so vague about the refreshers and won’t give me any specific details.
Also, what ballpark amount were the refreshers when you were still getting them?
Why Gruhhub reminds me of P0rnhub all times?
We serve food for the body and they serve food for the mind, close enough
Pron is poison
Current TC?
$0. I was laid off a couple weeks ago.
Could be a lot of room for growth at GH since attrition is so high
Lots of technical debt at grubhub and custom frameworks that are poorly designed and docimented. You have been warned!
Imo most places are worse, including my previous employer, and so I’ve heard from several ex-colleagues who went on to join big tech
Whats your YoE?
5-6 depending on how you define it specifically.
What level is this for?
That Chewy yearly bonus is actually quarterly and is paid a high rates. From a TC perspective you’ll do better at Chewy. The MSP office is open now if you want to work in it. You may be the only one there though. The wlb can be tough. It’s team dependent and there are things that could be better. It’s manageable though, especially at se 2 level. Dm me if you want to know more.
Certain backend teams have a not so desirable WLB at Grubhub. frontend teams are usually have better hours. Would choose Grubhub over Chewy. Custom frameworks aren’t always so bad (and IMO, pretty common at many companies, including my previous employer, where they are much worse). Just make sure you work with a Chicago team so your hours sync with theirs for meetings.
Can you elaborate on which teams you know of that have bad wlb?
I would definitely recommend Chewy. WLB definitely depends on the team. My team is good and I feel I get nice opportunity to show my skills with respect to technology and stack. You will definitely grow and if you do well definitely you can move up the ladder quicker

I saw a Googler ( Male ) hit a lady multiple times in the cafe, should I report?
I would never recommend chewy.... it’s toxic and wlb is really bad
Did you previously work there?
Let’s just say I know a ton of people there. Upwards of 10-20
