Twitch Tc: 190k Location: SF Role: Machine Learning Engineer Level: Entry Main benefits: friendly/supportive co-workers, supportive manager who supports aggressive career growth, resources for mentorship, allow for project proposals from all levels, almost impossible to get PIP, good wlb/on call Main concerns: amazon will own my current side projects/businesses Microsoft Tc: verbal offer, unknown yet Location: Seattle Role: applied scientist Level: L63, may be downleveled to L62 Main benefits: Higher leveling/exposure to higher level processes, remote for a year, location (need to relo to Seattle in next 1.5 years for personal reasons), allow ownership of existing side projects/businesses outside of work Main concerns: getting pipped due to overleveling, unclear wlb/on call, co-workers are much older/not as friendly, lack of mentorship (fear of PIP) Snap tc: 205k Location: LA Role: Machine Learning Engineer Level: entry Main benefits: probably best/fastest learning option, ownership end to end Main concerns: bad wlb/oncall, co-workers seem competitive, unclear mentorship, unclear IP policy YOE: 1 Education: PhD, ML, strong pub record Leaning towards Microsoft but fear of PIP (not sure if Microsoft blacklists?) due to potential overleveling (weak system design). However, eventual goal of working at startup needs wider skills, so MLE may be better.

Snap can be a rocketship in terms of scope for growth and comp increase with promo. Microsoft is so 2000s
Are side projects a significant concern? I've heard CA is much better for IP ownership of outside projects.
I have a couple of side businesses which may outgrow my full time employment. Yeah I need to dig a little more into CA laws, however Microsoft for sure doesn’t seem to care about moonlighting
Blind loves snap/google, you won’t get anything unusual out of this poll. I’d recommend to prioritize team and work scope over TC for your initial jobs until 3-4 yoe.
That’s a good point. What would be your recommendation based on the info above?
I’d personally risk it for MS AS as long as it offers AS scope and you haven’t lied your way to get this offer/role.
MS2021 is the kinder gentler Microsoft. The Ballmer and Gates era “fire 10% of the company every year” the company followed from late 90’s to Satya’s era was adopted by Amazon (and FB if posts here are a gauge). Microsoft really seems to have changed (from my prior experience). You should still interview every 2 years and promote yourself, but I wouldn’t fear a PIP.
Wouldn’t fear PiP but I’ve heard bad things about re-orgs and layoffs at MSFT. Having said that, OP has a PhD so unlikely their demand drops. I vote Snap due to the upcoming VR revolution.
@op Did you get numbers from Microsoft?

Why is our country owned by Israel? I don't want my tax dollars fund genocide. How can we stop this nonsense?
Offers decent for entry level. Low ball if successful PhD from a decent school/advisor in the US. 190k is Masters’s / undergrad tc.
