Elon asks LJE for funding. Larry agrees. Elon pressures tech companies to re-negotiate. AWS says NO. OCI says YES. Twitter migrated full tech stack to OCI. This is Elons master plan to repay Larry in a legal and thoughtful method. Crazy?
🍿🍿
OCI is definitely cheaper but they’re missing so many key features…
Not really. Gartner scored OCI 94% for critical cloud capabilities last year And You can still make this same argument against AWS lacking in database offerings. AWS cannot compete anywhere close in terms of cost, performance, or security.
Gartner is fucking dumb though
Lol
OCI currently may be a good option, current head is someone sensible, but it's still oracle, and it's never guaranteed to stay good this way, this might actually be a good thing for OCI if they don't fuck it up. unless the infra cost savings are like 40% doubt this is a win for Twitter though, your entire team will now have to learn a new platform, hiring knowledgeable people will be harder and also less appealing for people who are picky with their jobs tech/career growth. I would be impressed if they migrated successfully without hiccups, cross region deployments on the same cloud is already a pain, cross cloud deployments even more so
Honestly 40% is not unheard of when comparing workloads. And a lot of that is data egress fees. OCI does not charge data moving between ADs, Regions, and out of OCI. AWS Charges up the butt for egress to be technical. Also cloud economics is crazy on gen2 architecture. Benefits of second mover. 40% is very possible without changing the app. Just L&S https://www.oracle.com/cloud/economics/
If they 'renegotiate a deal' with OCI that seems to imply they were already multi cloud and running at least partially on OCI and there *may* not be much to migrate right ?
My Google-Fu might be weak right now but I *think* from what I've seen they've exclusively used AWS from what it looks like. But yeah, may or may not be a big issue if they don't depend on AWS-specific features entirely to operate. Given this is Twitter we're talking about, they've likely tried to eliminate any CSP dependence by using their own tooling, but I can't help but feel how much of PITA this is gonna be for them to migrate, even with a dedicated team helping them migrate. Wondering if the cost savings of hiring such a team + training existing personnel that has shrunk significantly+hiring new people that ideally have OCI experience will pan out... I don't think so but i might be wrong.
They are renegotiating with Oracle
To benefit from the migration, you have to succeed in the migration first. Let's see how that goes!
Aren’t Twitter has a contract or something with GCP?
Damn. Why are people voting feasible when it's going to be a shit show!
Sounds like Larry is going to give a whole bunch of Engineers to Twitter for "migration" It gives the illusion that Oracle is a viable cloud vendor. It gives Elon hired labor in Oracle's name so he doesn't have to back out from his house cleaning. Seems like a win-win.

Horrible Netflix ML interview experience
Because OCI is so much better and migration with only skeleton crew is a piece of cake.
OCI is better than AWS ?
