Twitter's machine learning ethics, transparency, and accountability (META) team has been laid off along with countless other workers. See @ruchowdh’s tweet. Who would have guessed that money-losing, safe-space, woke research projects get cut during a bear market, especially when the new owner overpaid for the company by 2-3x?!
Those jobs were moved to metaverse
Yes. We should give zero Fucks about how machine learning is used. Good job Elon. Eyeroll
Only if the AI ethicists actually work on AI safety rather than pretending to be offended by everything ML algorithms do and then collecting $350k paycheck per year.
And I'm here wondering if they had things deployed in prod because Twitter is currently troll heaven.
People are shocked at Twitter layoffs but don’t realize the only reason the company was able to overpay all those employees was cause it was public and taking in investor money. Now it’s privatized, and Elon prob realized it’s not feasible to overpay that many engineers to sit around customizing like button colors or the snowflake employees. Just goes to show how engineers are able to coast at public companies more since they have more funds to keep up with the overpaying and not performing much work
Very true
Yeah like pre Elon, it was a great company cause the interview process was insanely easy for good pay and the responsibilities weren’t too crazy cause they weren’t innovating. I’m not a Elon fanboy(hate his company culture ideas) but that’s just the reality for companies like Twitter
I can't speak for machine learning but Twitter never had ethics, transparency or accountability so that department was clearly failing on 75% of its OKRs. Not surprised they found themselves on the sidewalk with a footprint on their ass and a hurt expression on their face.
Metrics brought to you by my down-under
So, only people who were fairly vocal about their dislike for Elon were fired?
So, you just made something up and posted it on social media?
What does the team do? Using machine learning to detect unethical accounts or limit machine learning alg to be ethical?
If we’re going off user experience on Twitter, then it appears their algorithms have decided it’s ethical to censor right-leaning voices but let scambots roam free.
The latter. To eliminate "bias" from datasets and ML model outcomes, bring in interpretability for models. Agree with OP that their definition of "bias" was right-leaning voices
elon is very aware of the potential risks / consequences of AI... but fires the entire ethical ai team? hmmm
Team’s mission: build ethical tooling to reduce inherent bias in ML algorithms. Reality: Algos designed by leftist researchers in the Bay Area, trained using datasets labeled by leftists within on company, and deployed on a platform known to censor non-leftist voices. Everything that we the creators disagree with is bias. No wonder this team got fired.

Twitter doesn’t—Musk does, 😂.
