Hi All, Looking for an advice on home office setup. I’ve been working at FANG+ company for a couple of years and with all hard work I don’t get promotion to senior level. A year ago I decided to lean towards life in WLB – I lowered the bar and became a mediocre actor: - starting at 9-10 am, ending at 3-4 pm, taking a 90 minute lunch time break: go to gym, pool, sometimes take a power nap - don’t do any demos - don’t initiate any changes - don’t express my opinion on any changes or review, don’t visit others demos, spec reviews if I can avoid; prefer watching recordings at 2x - acting reactively, not proactively - minimized participation in meetings - once a month I take an official day or two off - once a month I take extra unofficial day off (feeling bad, power outage, no internet, snowing) - last year I took 3 weeks PTO At the recent performance review, I didn’t get promotion again, however got my bonus and refreshers. Nothing changed but I barely work 20 hours vs 50+ last year. I feel myself much better both physically and mentally. So I decided to find another job to increase my TC, got a couple of offers from some shitty companies and accepted the one from the profitable stable company. I’m not gonna leave first job. I also plan to contact the other company in a quarter and try either third job or leave the second if there is too much work. Looking for an advice of setting up home office. I’ve read the overemployed setup guide but it doesn’t seem good for me. Ordered: - another set of keyboard and mouse - mouse jiggler to keep laptops alive - extra monitors and mount arms - camera covers to avoid accidentally turning on when at two stand-ups - ordered kvm switch but I find it useless - two AirPods to combine them if need to be at two calls and can’t avoid them I still don’t have decision about desk – should I buy the L-shaped one or “wing shape”. Any other advice what to buy and how to prepare? New TC (2 jobs combined): 500k - 330 base - 170 RSUs/bonus YOE: 4 Moderate-high COL area (not SF bay)
How do I get a job with that comp and only work 20 hours… I’m 1/3 of the TC and 2.5x the hours
Apply at MasterCard lol
Branch, where I worked before joining current job #1, was a real draining people resources startup with very unrealistic expectations from people. So, first land some well paying company with known good WLB (not Amazon, Snap, etc). Then explore other opportunities on the market. In perfect scenario you are at two jobs (or teams) located on different coasts, so you don’t have to manage a lot of meetings. If you are core contributor, lead or non-IC role, then you are in trouble
The WiebeTech Programmable Mouse Jiggler MJ-3 is pretty good. Been using forever with no issues across several companies. I don't bother configuring it, I just plug it in and it appears as another mouse.
How has it turned out so far?
So far so good, working 8 am - 5 pm. On the 2nd job they are promoting me :) Got some extra $$$ on the bank account :) And feeling myself more confident in current times - less afraid of loosing income. The setup is: - standard: mouse + keyboard + monitor for each laptop + sony headset of different color - mouse jiggler - old iPad to display both calendars and slack notifications Don’t think it is good thing long-term, I perform at the very minimum, try to limit myself from working on “interesting” things.
Thanks for sharing update. Do you use a KVM or piKVM? I'm looking to RDP into machines and have them all in a grid.
Don’t bother with mouse jigglers they all suck. Place your mouse on top of a watch with a seconds hand and it functions the same.
Thanks. I ordered the one with a spinning circle with a pattern on it.
It’ll probably be fine but I went through 2 in one year. Been using my watch ever since and it works perfect
