Today, after reading blinds liberals comments and posts
I am planning to make a move within the next 6 months. I've been preparing actively for over 1 year before my first switch and passively for about another 1 year since I started my current job. So, I'd say I just need 2 more months of active studying before I give it a shot (although I know I will never be perfectly prepared). My ultimate goal would be to get into top-tier companies like Google (L3 since I have 2 YOE). I heard that I should practice with other companies that I am not fully interested in and then schedule interviews with my target companies. In this case, when should I start applying for my target companies? Should I start applying for the non-target companies now and then apply for my target companies once I finish the interviews with the non-target companies? #swe #software #engineering #google #microsoft #apple
I’ve read that it’s best to do large companies first, then smaller ones. Smaller companies have quicker processes
You can control timing by stalling until ready. Whatever you apply to, you want all the offers together. After the interview loop, when they contact you to talk about the offer, just state that you love the opportunity but are not ready to discuss an offer yet and need time
Be upfront with your intentions. I did phone screens with a bunch of companies and I let them know I won’t schedule an onsite until I have a few companies lined up. When I scheduled my onsites, I let the companies know that I wouldn’t negotiate on TC until I’ve completed all my onsites. This prevents exploding offers while you’re still interviewing. The number of companies really depends on you. I did 8 last time and got burned out before finishing. I’m only interviewing at 4 this time.
I started with practice, but it also takes months and can be tireing. And when you are ready you are just really fed up with all those interviews 😀 It is also hard to reject an otherwise good offer, better than your current TC. Next time I will do it like a sliding window: apply for less interesting companies first, and after 1-2 rounds apply for really attractive ones.
