I'm considering an offer out of state (in Washington state) and the two insurance companies they use is Cigna or Kaiser. I know Premera is really strong in WA State (thanks Microsoft), but I have no idea how Kaiser Permanente is... We have 2 small kids <5yo and one of our family members uses mental health benefit. Between Cigna or Kaiser, do either of them have good coverage in WA State for kids and mental health? thanks 260k
Kaiser is a monolith: you can only go to their facility. If their facility is close by and has the services you need it's GTG. If their big facility is far from where you would live it'll be really inconvenient and I'd choose Cigna. Then as others said find out whether the providers you would want to use are in their network.

I would consider who your medical provider will be and work that angle (which insurance do they take, expense options). Maybe also an HSA/FSA for some expenses. Put your needs on paper and work with an internal HR rep to decide which makes sense. You may also have an advocate resource that is a SME to help advise. Lastly, note the open enrollment dates in your calendar and use that as a time to evaluate current plans and options are available. Good on you for putting these needs as a priority. Smart planning.
