Recently traveled to India and everywhere I went it’s UPI and it’s directly linked to bank account not to any credit mechanism. Seems so much better financial platform. You have money? you buy else don’t 😀 Really impressed with the platform, it’s so easy and convenient. Never thought we could do financial transactions in India without cash 🤩 and that too so widespread from local pani puri vendor, a random ballon vendor to big box stores. You have a phone and it’s there for you. So innovative and yet so simple. This is what technology should try to do which really impacts lives, I can’t praise enough for this system 😍😍😍
India is slowly moving to more debt based economy but because the population in tier 2 and tier 3 cities along with villages are still reluctant to use technology or don’t have the means and infra hence cards are not widely accepted or used. This trend is changing slowly. Having said this the Modi govt has brought forth many such lovely changes and UPI is a wonderful example of such delight.
Yes I was pleasantly surprised, just wow
Lol UPI was being built from 2012. It was spear headed by the outgoing RBI governor Raghuram Rajan Sure Modi govt gave us UPI 🤣
Seems like everywhere people is spending as much as they are allowed (probably to keep with the Joneses). Since interest rates are relatively low in the USA, they use more credit here.
You really don’t understand US culture if you’re asking why people use credit
Yes right removed it
UPI is a govt subsidised version of what Visa/mastercard are doing for decades now India is moving / trying to stop itself from becoming as capitalist as America As a product I don’t see a need for such system in Europe /UK which are also non credit based economy
What was wrong with the Visa or Mastercard debit card? Search about UPI - it has no plan of viable revenue generation, banks are losing money on every transaction and this completely isolates foreign travellers. Think about travellers who don’t have Indian bank account. As usual, false national pride for something which should not have been a problem in the first place.
Yes India should not build a local infrastructure. Visa and Mastercard can provide the same functionality at a low cost and make some money. India should fix slums and toilets.
Well PoS systems are even worse, they charge for the device plus every transaction and they are slow as hell. Use UPI and you will never go back
Yeah. It was tough for me traveling to india this time. Small vendors and shops don’t accept cards anymore. I had to call my brother every time I had to make a purchase and make him pay for my shopping via phone. A way to add foreign reserves to a temp upi account would be great.
Use cash like before till you get your UPI setup done
Most atms don’t work and most have small daily limits. Anyway I agree upi is great. it is just a suggestion to think of ways to make it easier for people from outside. I felt bad missing out on all the happening stuff.
I tried getting upi but had to get aadhar. That would need passport. The problem is is you cant use any apps without upi
Is there a way to hook up Canadian or US credit cards to Google pay in india. I can't set it up so struggling as I don't have much cash. Last time I was able to use my visa credit card in more places. Now the uber guy wants me to pay cash/UPI instead of my credit card
Yes this is the problem. I dont see how upi is good. It is a pain to use any app if you dont have indian passport
