Unionized UPS drivers will make $170,000/yr on average. Software engineers make $115,000/yr on average. Sources: https://www.indeed.com/career/software-engineer/salaries https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2023/08/10/ups-driver-pay-new-contract/70571518007
Lift heavy things or sit in a comfy chair and copy paste stuff from chatgpt.
My take: Unions are bad because they lead to higher pay on average but not for a few people. CS degrees will become less desirable as pay and working conditions deteriorate, and degree costs increase.
Incorrect. 170k is comp plus benefits. Even entry paid software engineers probably make closer to 400k by the same measure and obviously work far less.
"By the end of the new contract, full-time UPS delivery drivers will make an average of $49 per hour, which works out to nearly $102,000 per year, assuming a 40-hour workweek, 52 weeks a year."
They work way more than 40 hours almost famously but yes the raise is only 7 bucks an hour over several years. Much of the 170k is benefits from Healthcare to pension.
Software Engineer still for the win can work remote from your bed lmao. Compared to working in a tin box that can cause heat strokes, drive to unsafe neighborhoods or deal with the rude public. This is not a conversation lol SWE pays good and the lifestyle is good.
At what salary would you say software engineer is no longer worth the “office” comfort? $100k? $70k? $40k? $10k?
40k lmfao that’s minimum wage in some states. At that point I would be rethinking my career choices. Thankfully SWE is well compensated and a good lifestyle
Amazon drivers will make more than SDEs soon
170k includes all benefits. 115k does not.
Good for them, many of them work way harder than we do.
And they won’t cry about RTO every single day.
Define hard. You can’t equate physical work to mental work. Apples to oranges.
