UPS lays off 12,000, RTO 5 days a week

For those thinking of leaving tech… https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-30/ups-to-cut-12-000-jobs-bring-workers-in-five-days-a-week

Broad economy is in trouble. Maybe market is propping it for election year.

Netflix bowshamwow Jan 30

Yeah, I guess if you ignore all metrics on how the economy is actually doing and only look at layoffs to get back to normal employee counts or get a sweet bonus for CEOs, the economy IS in trouble. Totally.

They are saying that its the result of people going to the store more. So while UPSs revenue is down, retail revenue should not be down.

Amazon brings Jan 30

So they ask employees to come in 5 days a week and at the same time announce layoffs. What a hit to employee morale. People will be going to RTP0 5 days a week praying everyday that they arent laid off

UPS lnb3j Jan 30

The RTO 5 days was announced earlier in the month. The morale was already low

What percentage of UPS's 500,000 global employees are office based? I'm assuming it's less than 10%. Why does your geriatric CEO think 5 days a week RTO will make a difference?

Microsoft anon748272 Jan 30

I know some people that work here. Middle management is absolute trash. So much waste on tech vendors that are leeching off the company, and very old school boomerism mentality. It's a damn shame.

Agreed. I worked for Sapient tech vendor who was fleecing UPS while delivering offshore garbage and egregious tech debt thx to the “brilliance” 🙄 of Nigel Vaz (an absolute piece of shit human)

Rubrik ZaKingSlyr Jan 31

Who is this “piece of shit” human?

Amazon azxsc Jan 30

Don’t worry the drivers are unionized. Their 200k tc is safe

$170k TC for tenured senior drivers

Inclusive of benefits and company retirement contributions. Would you drive a truck without air conditioning for 8+ hrs every day for 20+ years to get to $120k salary?

Meta tankybozz Jan 30

Isn't this seasonal? Hire temp for the holidays.

UPS lnb3j Jan 30

Nope. Prolly going to be non-ops. Its already been said too much is being spent on those resources

Addepar SCaP27 Jan 30

The actual core workforce there is unionized so unless ups goes belly up, they will be fine

Unions don't guarantee jobs. They are about working conditions for those that have jobs. They can still be RIFed

Citibank mbcc87 Jan 30

Worked there many years ago, in management. UPS might one of the few jobs where the internal perception is that the rank and file have it better than the management class. We routinely got bent over backwards having to extend ourselves in all kinds of ways for no extra pay while the salaried workers could nickle and dime their way to high salaries with the protection of the union

Figure Sorrol Lei Jan 30

So you're living proof that we should unionize

Indeed HwWo51 Jan 30

Apparently, economists are calling this a “rolling recession” where layoffs are cycling through industries one at a time, rather than all at once

Clever way to shift the narrative

If any of the 12K UPS workers see fitting roles at TikTok … I’m here to refer them

TaskUs XGvf32 Jan 31

Depending on this year's election, we could be next.

UPS ywHr55 Jan 31

Thx. I saw some on LinkedIn I may look more into

AVEVA SWE Rajesh Jan 30

I thought UPS employees were in a union and they weren’t able to just take away WFH like that? Could’ve sworn I saw someone many months ago bragging about working UPS and their WFH was safe due to union

Addepar SCaP27 Jan 30

Only the full time drivers and warehouse workers. Seems like this cut is more focused on white collar roles and temps
