Employers don’t have to give you the day off on a federal holiday. Only government employees would be guaranteed to be off.

Except we know that's not true. Have you met the Latino Republicans? Have you met most Latinos, Africans and Europeans, they are quite conservative. I get the feeling on the part of the GOP to feel that way at but it's simply not true.

If you can't make it to the polls by 8pm or mail in your ballot anyway, getting the day off is not going to do anything for you.
Given that it's supposed to be all citizens' duty to vote and how few do it, any encouragement seems like it would be a good thing
The bar is pretty low already. Perhaps people don't vote because they dislike the candidates, or their vote won't matter (Republicans in SF bay), or they don't understand the issues. A day off doesn't fix any of that.

Adding that law would be redundant. Employers are already required by most state laws to give employees time to vote. Unless the polls are open for two hours pre/post work. Throw in early voting and absentee ballots and there is no reason. Voter turnout would likely not be affected.

We should just make no-excuse absentee voting allowed in all states (19 still doesn't have it).
