I work with a lot of immigrants, but the folks I’ve asked don’t seem to like to talk about their immigration experience. But I’m curious about how the country is different from what you expected before immigrating?
Awesome country with some racism against me from the 'people of color'
Difficult in dating for guys.. indian guys rank at the bottom and Seattle is one of the most racist cities for Indian guys
Try NYC
Amazon, what racism did you experience in Seattle?
For starters, picking up girls is definitely harder than they showed in movies.

So this is what I have experienced so far 1) Good country with almost negligible corruption. At least I haven’t seen any relating to any official work. This os good as common people don’t have to deal with this. Corruption breeds more corruption. People from my country want government job just because they can get more money through it. 2) Americans can be deceiving in intentions with smile. The quick sweet feedback may not be what they have planned for an actual review for example. 3) I think Americans cook less at home. 4) It’s tough to form close relationships with people you are working with. You may work with same people for years and would end up having surfacial bonds upon retirement. Overall all the country has more goods except gun culture. I feel people have more freedom than other places. Less judgement on what an individual is doing.
Lmao negligible corruption 😂

The competition is relentless. It just pays more
The good: Much more beautiful in person, the national parks, the city skylines and even the mundane stuff looks good for the most part. It's very easy to figure the day to day stuff out even for new immigrants. Very little discrimination against immigrants compared to a lot of other countries. Love how diverse it is, I can get to try so many different cuisines. The bad: Immigration system is broken, Healthcare system is broken, political system is broken. The only reason this country is where it is today is because it it's geography. This is the perhaps the best country to be upper middle class and above. But it feels seriously difficult to be poor here.
Beautiful nature and generally nice people. Not everyone is a gun toting redneck, which is what movies portray. I'm also amazed at the racial diversity in the country. Movies and TV shows don't really show the real people of America. Higher education is unparalleled. American top 50 universities are really good (albeit expensive) I've been surprised by the staggering poverty. I think it only remains hidden because everything is spaced out. Out of sight, out of mind. People are too competitive and individualistic. To the point of toxicity. Friendships are utilitarian. Plenty of superficial "How's it going?" but kind words, genuine curiosity, deep heartfelt conversations just doesn't exist in regular vocabulary. Coworkers can't become friends because of said competitiveness. I think company culture is part of the reason. Family is forgotten and left to their own devices. Keeping up with the Jones is a real thing. And it's very subtle with underlying meaning. When someone says, "I'm in the market for an apartment, how is yours in prospect park", they aren't really in the market for anything. They are only gauging your social status by sizing your apartment and rent. I'm surprised by how few Americans have traveled outside America. Also, knowledge about the rest of the world is non-existent. This is often the source of racial and superiority biases. I'm also surprised by how willingly Americans accept the bottom tier masochistic healthcare system. In my country, people would occupy the streets until politicians fix this. That, or just behead them. Despite all this, I do consider America as my adopted home and will do my part in making things better.
Great take
Good post, same applies to canada
I expected more Americans in the workplace. I knew that tech is mostly Asians (which I have no problem with), but I expected there to be at least more than one American in our entire department 😂
Pros I didn't expect: top notch national parks, best pay in tech by a significant margin (I expected it to be the best but not by the margins I'm seeing), among the least racist Western countries(excluding the immigration system) Cons I didn't expect: stressful work-life balance for most jobs, healthcare system that only helps upper middle class and above, discriminative and outdated immigration system, unnecessary fake smiles and niceties Overall, it's a great country to move to if you're in tech and not born in India
