How is the work culture different for companies who have offices in US and Europe ? Policies on leave, timings etc
People in Europe work hard and go home. They work to live not live to work. One would never walk around with your company badge on display or in clothes with a company logo. Compensation is complicated by taxes, available services and cost of living. Tech is big in Ireland, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland with pockets in other countries.
I loled at "in Europe" and "work hard" being that close together.
I think the better description of European work culture is: work just barely enough to live.
orpo, are you in Europe and consider moving to USA or vice versa?
Currently in US but pondering whether to move to Europe.
Am in same boat as OP and trying so that something clicks for me and I can make the move. I have kid too so need to be concerned about language and schooling needs as well. I have a gut feeling that in long run it's better to spend life in Europe. Btw I am not American.
Policies are better in Europe, pay is far lower, managers are decrepit and nationalistic, it’s perfect for mediocre engineers born in that country. However if you are good and actually want to achieve something, you are better off in the SFBA.
WWW was invented in Europe which is how we are even having this conversation.
Yes indeed! The guy who invented WWW at CERN was on a shitty temporary contract. He never got a permanent job there. ‘Temporary’ in Europe means after a few years, the employer must offer a permanent contract or not renew the temporary one. Guess what happens, regardless of how good you are. Be careful with unadvertised features of the european system.
Everything is exactly the same in Europe and the United States
Way to go, bro!
Depends where are you originally from and where in EU you want to go. If it’s UK, Lifestyle wise it’s more or less same at the end of day. You earn lesser but get free education, medicine and great old age benefits. More peace of mind than always to be in the race in US if you have earned well already and looking to settle down, go for it.
I’d like to move to Europe too. Is Switzerland really the best bang for your buck when factoring for TC & quality of life?
Investigate a bit on cost of living. It is one of the most expensive places in the world.
Definitely better in Europe but compensation is less too
^ this. Make money in the US and retire in Europe.
Nope. Make money in Switzerland and retire there. More vacation days, higher salary than Bay Area, less taxes, no capital gains if you hold stocks for more than a year, the Alps, and located in the middle of Europe.
