Is it easy to learn UX courses online and get a job after completion. Thinking to do a course from general assembly What would be starting salary?
It’s easier to get into a company as a developer, find a design mentor, and switch roles.
I don’t have any coding background
Freecodecamp.com will get you a certification for free in about a month. They cover some basic UX and visual design principles...and you’ll come away with a half decent portfolio that trounces what you’d get from GA.
I personally think it takes a very long time to become a good designer. Weird that there are months-long certifications now. I studied for 4 years plus a stupid amount of my free time fucking around with stuff.
GA is a great way to get experience, build a portfolio, dive into your local UX community, and get a job. It all depends on your past experience, ability to hustle, dedication, persistence, presentation skills, salesmanship, and your local job market. You could probably make 90K starting out as a contractor which is a good route straight out of a program. Full time is a lot more rigorous and just a GA type of program isn't going to set you up to be competitive for full-time at a larger tech company. Get yourself enrolled, no time like the present.
Late stage / post-IPO company in the top 30, 125K+ is a safe bet. Smaller startups 50K+. I would take the first route and learn from more experienced designers while making decent money. It also matters how you start. Start at a larger brand name company and they’ll for the most part all assume you’re good enough to work at any of them. I’m not a huge fan of GA but with the right teacher I’m sure it could be valuable. It is getting harder to convert into UX roles without a degree or past design experience. The universities have caught up to the discipline and are turning out decent candidates.
Which course online would you recommend that would stand some weight when applying?
