Want to move to product management. Have been interviewing for Senior PM Operations at Uber. Do most people from here transfer to PM roles at Uber? 1. What is hierarchy for Operations compared to PM? 2. What are salary levels compared to PMs? #productmanager #product
(I’m assuming you mean Sr Product Operations as PM operations is not a role) Yes. Lots of people have done the transition from Product Operations to PM. You can work in Prod Ops for a year, then apply to the Product Manager Academy (a training program for people at Uber with no prior PM experience). You will be re-leveled based on your interviews and background. This means that while you may be an L5 Product Operations Manager, you could go into the PM Academy as an L3 PM. Then at the end of the program (six months), you will either be given your role as a PM in the current level, given your role as a PM in a different level (could be up or down), or given 60 days to find a new position at Uber. For people that really want to do PM, I think it’s a great program and product operations is a solid jumping point. The advice I’ve been given from those who’ve done the program is to be very picky about which manager you apply to report into. They will make or break the experience.
Hey would you say Product Ops or Product Analyst has a better chance of becoming PM in the future? (be it externally or internally)
Both can and have! It really depends on what skills you want to grow. If you like project management and organization, go for product operations. If you like data analytics/visualization and coding, go for product analyst.
Internal mobility at Uber is a lie. Don’t count on getting into the PM academy program.
Can anyone tell me how difficult is to change teams in Uber considering I have been here for only 1 month?
If you’re just trying to change team (not role or level), it’s very possible. Pretty sure the requirement is 12 months in your current team / role, but check teamdot on the internal transfers page. If you’re trying to change to a completely new role (ops to product manager, DS to engineer, etc), it’s possible but you’ll need to be able to show that you can perform well in the role. You may want to seek out someone currently in that role and ask what the requirements are to study up for interviews. Hiring managers are also generally willing to talk to an internal candidate and walk them through what they would need to do to show them they are ready.
It’s 6 months for team change & 12 months for role change
It's an Ops role. Huge step down from PM. And salary will be peanuts in comparison. Shoot for a PM role or find another company.
It's hard to move from consulting to tech. Although I have been working in a similar role at consulting - have been at one of the Big 4's for almost 5 years. Last 4 years have been managing two software products - in both Operations role and PM role. I can elaborate more, but what do you think?
If your goal is PM role, try to get a PM role. Even being a PM at a smaller company is significantly better then being a Ops manager at a larger company. It will be hard for you to shed it off your resume when you apply to Big 4.
Salary is lower
Isn’t there still a hiring freeze in place through end of May?
Headcount freeze, not hiring freeze.
It's a real pain to transfer ladders. But if you haven't done PM before it's your only option. But be prepared to make the switch by leaving for a startup vs getting the role at Uber.
I know someone who was great at ProdOps and was down-leveled 2 levels to L3 for Product. They also didn’t get a lot of support. They used it though to interview for other companies for product at L5 with some slight exaggeration on their resume.
👏 L5 in FANG?
Driver teams are the best, by far. So if you have a choice go for one of them.
There is no Senior PM Operations at Uber. Are you interviewing for Operations, Product or Product Operations? Moving into Product Management from a different function is a nightmare that requires you to accept going down one level (or more), and going through a PM academy that takes 6+ months. Whoever here says “lots of people have transitioned from X to PM” is lying shamelessly. Ask to speak with people who did this transition, they are few and far in between.
I am interviewing for Senior Product Operations Manager
Which area of product ops?
