Currently staff SRE at LinkedIn, have offers from Uber for 5B in Platform (they’re sticking to the levels.fyi BS) and Coinbase at L6 in SRE. What would you choose and why if the biggest factor was optimisation for growth on the IC track (NOT TC)? (Staying with LinkedIn is not an option) Blind tax: TC: 1.4Cr (India) Coinbase: Standard L6 offer (~2Cr) Uber: Unknown at this point (verbal confirmation, talking to teams)
YOE.
Were LC type questions asked in both coinbase and uber?
Uber was more design oriented coding questions, eg: variation of LRU cache, basic expression evaluator, etc Coinbase was LC Easy-Medium, but I guess that varies from SRE to SWE track Either way, both required perfect clean well structured code with test cases, exception classes, etc
Wow, 5B with 7yoe? Looks like there's no correlation between levels and yoe anymore. If you can just prepare and perform well, companies are willing to offer any level. But congratulations!
Well, I can’t thank you enough for raining on my parade. But I have a 6 page CV and it would appear I have been fortunate to have impactful work thus far in my career that I’ve executed well. My current role is quite niche so that definitely helped. To the point of interview performance, yes that helps but at Staff equivalent levels a lot of it becomes about the scale you’ve worked at, behavioural/adaptability, leadership, etc for which interview performance is just about how you sell it, but you should’ve done the work to speak about it. Hope that helps.
First of all, I would reject your profile if I got a 6 page resume. Secondly, LinkedIn's titles are inflated. Lastly, I recently got E5 for Facebook with 5 yoe, which I think is one level below 5B at Uber. So my comment was explaining the situation overall
Op, do you have a PhD?
Nope, only bachelors
Impressive. Can you please decompose the Coinbase offer?
Congrats op. Quite impressive
Thank you! Would love to hear your advice too :)
How is SRE and SWE different? Do they both have similar pay at same levels?
Pay is similar (mostly) and like SWE, SRE too has multiple tracks which can be product or infrastructure focused. Latter pays more and has a higher bar.
Can a SRE switch to SWE and vice-versa? And how does the work compare to the SWE coding and design work?
Congrats op. Voted for Coinbase for learning purpose and bullish on Crypto. Not related but, any suggestions for people who've started working in industry from 2-3 years? Also how much is your networth till now? Any FIRE plans?
Thank you! Idk about suggestions, I only really started managing my own career in my most recent gig, before that I just went with the flow mostly. Maybe that was a good thing. I’m passionate about building stuff and doing things the right way, the latter can be a double edged sword so use your own discretion. Not FIRE, but FI definitely to build a safety net so I can make bolder career moves (not talking working 4 hours a day). NW is not great, more than the top of the line offer I have but not by much :)
That's great to hear! Going to miss my co-li employee. All the best :)
Congrats OP. Any pointers for LI SRE interviews? How many coding rounds and are they LC easy/mid or more like practical coding questions. I desperately need a job. If someone reads this pls refer me.
You can find the entire script with exact questions for LinkedIn SRE interviews on Glassdoor :) Prepare well, don’t cram. We literally record that in feedback i.e. “candidate knew the questions beforehand”. If you can answer follow ups, it wouldn’t matter if you knew the question or not.
Thanks Op will check that out.
Huge Congratulations. Can you please share your YOE?
YoE: 7+
And thanks!
