Not sure how legit this is, but looking at high TCs here in the US, jobs are being outsourced. In the past, IBM has shifted a vast amount of engineering abroad, but I am doubtful if that helped them. For Uber, cost-cutting might be the priority, but at what cost, if any. Do you see any drawbacks to it? https://nypost.com/2020/05/13/uber-ceo-reportedly-favored-rank-and-file-layoffs-over-pay-cuts-for-top-execs/
Having lower quality codebase
That's a cliche. Low cost doesn't mean low quality, esp. if the lower cost is due to lower COL in the country.
^ it does
Saves the company maybe .2b but costs them even more in the long run Makes sense as a short term solution if you’re cash poor
That's a cliche. Low cost doesn't mean low quality, esp. if the lower cost is due to lower COL in the country.
It’s not only about quality though. There’s also a cost in keeping the people making the decisions and the people doing the work distant. The stronger those connections, the better.
It would be pretty arrogant of us to think only engineers in US are amazing. There are plenty of talent throughout world .
Agreed. But it shouldn't be underestimated that the high concentration of talent in one city leads to proliferation of more talent. That is the real benefit of bay/seattle/nyc. Will be interesting to see how it plays out as more people outsource
What are you talking about? by what gets posted here on blind, only H1B s are amazing... It just so happens they are in the US.
And make H1b more stringent, more jobs will be outsourced
Kick consultancies out and 2x more H1B visas will be available for companies like Uber.
Then all the consultancy jobs will Be outsourced, everyone(employers, employees) is greedy and will always try to save money
Looks like the magga Americans are getting what they want. 🙂
I hope they outsource the work. It makes building competing startups in the USA easier. They will always have to hire top talent to stop them from competing.
I hope they outsource the work too!!
Yay Yay!! Jobs are going to 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳.. MAGAs..how are you feeling 'bout this?
Can’t imagine there are many on Blind
With the adjusted paycut. And then when India's inflation kicks in, then they'll move to the Philippines. Yay!
Indians shouldn’t be happy for few more thousand jobs, instead back the home grown companies , this will create a ecosystem in India
India already has a decent startup ecosystem. More high paying jobs in India mean more money for the devs there, so better financial security, leading to more risk taking. We'll see even more startup success stories in the next few years from India.
Its “decent” for years now, not to the level of Silicon Valley / China/ Israel. Needs to step up the game match top countries, Stop drooling over US outsourced jobs
What is Maga? Koi samjao
Making America Great Again (MAGA) is Trump’s campaign slogan from 2016.
Ohh thanks.
Saying good engineers only live on the west coast is similar to saying smart people exist only in top 10 universities. It’s just not true. There are a lot of people out there that are hungry to succeed and don’t need free food or a crazy comp to motivate them. This is true meritocracy and it looks like the future will be remote. Good for the world as it gives chance to a broader spectrum of population to participate in wealth creation in tech.
Exactly, the only advantage US has is the huge head start in all the sectors
It should be pointed out fully remote is great within India as well. This means you can work from an awesome hill station or beach like nainitaal or Goa and still have tech job without Delhi pollution or Bangalore traffic
Uber Engineering India confirmed
What confirmation?
Layoffs confirmed.
