Hey guys. I'll be joining Uber India as a new grad and wanted to understand how the compensation grows with promos. I noticed that some people get promoted from L3 to L4 in ~1.5 years, then to L5a in another ~1.5 to 2 years. At the same time I also saw how L4 and L5a are being hired from other companies at 60 lpa and 100 lpa. But the new grad TC is just 30. Does this mean your compensation grows at such a rapid pace, or do the internally promoted engineers get paid less for the same role and work? If so, can someone share these numbers? Base will increase from 18 -> 33 -> 50 These are the current starting bands. Stock Refreshers will completely depend on performance and how desperate they are to retain you. I have seen people get promoted from new grad to L5A in 4-5 years but these new grads have joined in new teams set up in India and grew with the team as their scope increased. It may not be possible for all teams.
And do we get refreshers on promotion too? Also have the bands increased now, as L3 new grad compensation has increased
One point to note here is that the external hires typically have a much higher YOE than the internally promoted ones. So it doesn't make that much sense to compare. For example, Uber doesn't hire external L4's for less than 3 yoe in India And usually the typical L4 hire has 4-5 yoe. Compare this to the internally promoted L4 at 1.5-2 yoe.

Internal promos are paid less in most companies compared to external hire
Any rough numbers on how less? 50% of what external hires get, more, less?
No way, not 50% less at Uber. It's approximately 25% less compared to the upper band of external offers, for L4. I've seen 70-75 L max external offers for L4 while internal folks still do make atleast ~55 L.
