I keep getting pestered by this recruiter to take an e8 principle eng interview at meta. I am currently a staff engineer (l5b), yoe 15. They can clearly see my level on LI at Uber so why would they be offering me an interview at this level? Should I just go for it? Is it actually possible to uplevel that much in the interview? Is it mostly based on interview experience vs background?
They know what you don’t know!
Do you have some sort of niche experience?
Wouldn't hurt to try, I mean. Are they recruiting for a specific org?
It’s either E6 or you are a well known person in the industry.
If the recruiter doesn’t have “executive” (like “executive search”) or at least “leadership” in their title on their Linkedin, they are not reaching out for E8.
K it's not e8 then that clears is up
If you’re ok with E7, then take the E8 interview and worst case you get downleveled to something you’re happy with?
They may be using "principal" in a vague sense . I had similar experience with some companies.
I'm 5B, Meta recruiter said I could be E7 (explicitly) so I guess this is a trend or maybe a strategy to entice you then you're downleveled to E6/E7 in interview
Probably E7

Wild lmao. Recruiter specifically said e8?
They said interview for "Principal level SWE opportunity", that is e8 right? If they then give me a down level interview that would be the biggest bait and switch.
Technically “principal” is supposed to be E8 like Google, but they’re definitely messaging you for E6. 5B is seen as E5/6 here. There aren’t external titles for leveling here, so recruiters make up shit. The E8 hiring team is very strict and never uplevel. In fact, they often downlevel.
