Uber L5a Career Path
Received a 5a offer from Uber SF office. Base: 190k Bonus: 33k RSU: 700k in 4 years Sign on: 60k in 2 years TC: 420 (including sign on) YoE: 11 Refresher is performance based but can be over 100k. That's a lot of money! How hard it is to be promoted to 5b? How long does it take? 5b promo is elusive. Most engineers will never get it
Like L6 at Google?
I led a team of 10+ people, delivered company wide project and still didn’t get 5b. Backstabbing culture is a real shit. Also Uber’s special feature is having multiple teams working on the same thing and competing in the evolutionary cage fight.
5a is terminal at Uber, you won’t get 5B, but Uber’s pay for performance scheme is no joke. 2x multipliers on promo and perf can easily net you above median TC for the band above.
2x multiplier. That’s a ton of money
It used to be a higher ceiling and guidance changes year to year slightly. Some years they advise bimodal ranking of performance and some years they skew more normal (1.5-1.6 for top performers). It’s a good system.
5a enjoy a pretty large scope, leading on medium to large projects, definitely including design works. Even 4 could do design work if s/he want, and for 5a, coding is inevitable. For much less coding, aim for 5b
Did you have to negotiate to get these numbers? Looks like a good offer.
I do have other offers. But Uber normally pays more than other companies.
199/715/65 +33 is the max offer. 5a is senior SWE. You will be leading projects within your team including architecture
