Don't switch when you're close to promo, sde-2 to sde-3 is a big jump. You'll get ~90TC and can leverage that to get 1-1.3. Think about how the next 4-5 years will be, based on the path you take. Big TC hit imo, if you're expecting promo in a year. Also, think realistically on the promo, and don't trust your manager. You should know where you stand, if you're meeting the bar, and how your team values politics vs performance. If there's any doubt in that, negotiate for a better TC than your current offer and jump. This is my general opinion. I don't know much about uber. Saw your comments just now on the issues you're facing with wlb, pip. In that case please do yourself a favor and look for a better place, also I've heard that uber has similar wlb, try to get more info on that. Maybe look at other companies like Google, LinkedIn.
Good Advice. Promo can be stretched max to 2 years considering the politics in the org and other SDE-2 are also in line. I didn't have any pip for sure. I am talking about what i seen in amazon generally.
Even if you yourself aren't pipped, the toxic culture, poor wlb and politics that come because of stack ranking and pip create a bad environment. Once all this shit starts affecting you mentally, no amount of money is worth it imo. If your team is different, then cool.

Hey OP, congrats on securing the offer. Here’s my take: - 5a offers at your YOE are rare. This would’ve potentially put you at the start of the 5a range explaining the lower TC. - Stocks are on the lower end. You should negotiate and ask for more. However, given the current stock price and annual projections you could potentially be looking at 2x gains. This is not guaranteed though so assess the risk and take a call. - 5A’s at Uber enjoy a broad scope and are expected to drive large scale projects. I can guarantee you that the scope would be larger than equivalent roles at FAANG counterparts. - 5A to 5B promotion is hard. I would say 2-3 years is doable with good performance. - Uber engineering and product commands considerable prestige in the market. You would have smart peers and learning opportunities. Vis-a-vis Amazon Engineering and product function at Uber is much smaller. Offer rate is also lower and process is definitely more selective. The flipside is stiff competition and performance pressure. - Last but not the least, Uber like all gig economy startups has been stressed under covid. Therefore, stock prices are depressed as well. You would hear a ton of flack about company prospects. However, the company is poised to get profitable by Q4, 21. I’d leave it to you to decide. Hope it helps.
