If I leave a staff-level position at Uber for a senior-level position at Netflix, will that be considered a downgrade or hurt my chances at getting Staff/Sr Staff offers in the future? I see there is overlap on levels.fyi. The position I'm applying to is L5/Senior at Netflix. Should I push for L6/Staff with good interview performance? #netflix TC $805k
Whats the comp at senior in nflx?
Not $805k from what I know.
i'd be happy getting top of netflix' senior band which is like ~600k from what i can tell. only reason i'm at 805 at uber is due to stock appreciation.
Not a downgrade. For many many years netflix really just have a flat “software engineer” and “senior engineer”. Getting into staff level there is not easy yo. Honestly, you are going to be fine with both on your resume.
How’s Oscar?
It’s a downgrade now.
I hate this advice but it’s true in most cases- think about what you want or what’s important to your future 2/3 yrs and optimize for that, be it total comp or career progression. If Uber meets that then be it if not then it’s Netflix it is.
You make 800k at Uber? There’s very very few companies that will pay you more at Staff IC. Netflix senior will most definitely be lower comp. Why are you even considering it?
RTO
Imaging making $800k and complaining because you need to go into the office a few days a week 💀
As far as I know the role was opened at a certain level and you will not have the negotiating power to get it raised, and you will not get your salary matched at L5. We just aren’t paying new hires like we used to. I’d save yourself the effort.
I know a couple dp in the past year. Def not as high but for senior still around 600k.
Not as high but potentially better culture including no RTO.
It used to be that way that it was not downgrading. Not anymore since Netflix has levels. E5/senior does not match your comp.
He's not asking about comp match though. He's asking about perceived experience based on the level. Netflix Senior is highly-regarded and can very easily be matched to staff levels elsewhere and even sr staff in some cases.
Nflx sr matches to lower to mid staff. Definitely not sr staff. Levels.fyi is pretty accurate on this
Assuming you’re okay with L5 comp, getting top of the band will require a stellar performance in the interview. And as others have said, Netflix roles are for a specific level. So there’s no bargaining upwards after the interview. Finally, don’t count on promo in a year or two. Promos are a combination of how much scope you’re covering and is there a business justification for it. So it’s not always under your control.
What’s the typical business justification?
See if your team in Netflix already has a Staff Engineer. If yes, you will have a significantly harder time getting to L6 unless there is a strong business need. Let go of any raises for a couple of years as well. 600 even overlaps with Staff band so even if you get promoted to 6, don't expect a very high raise. If you haven't already, try for a staff level in Google or Meta.
this!
So staff is not making 700k+ at netflix?
Reading this thread it sounds like it’s difficult to get promoted in Netflix?
Yes, very
Even for L4-to-L5?
No one cares about that.
