Landed in NYC and took a cab ride from JFK. Paid $77 for the ride. Much faster than Lyft in securing a ride, but also way more expensive. Started talking to the driver who went on a rant about how much Uber takes and how little he receives. I always thought it was 30% and blurted it out. This only further incensed the driver who suggested it was closer to half. Towards the end of the trip, the guy got a measly $37. That is a 52% commission. How on earth are these guys still not profitable?!? Also, how on earth are they getting away with fleecing both the customer and the driver with such outrageous prices and commissions? Update: 1) I was there when the driver received the payment post completion of the trip. I saw the amount and just for added measure, I confirmed it was my trip as I looked at the destination and pick up area 2) Lyft had prices that were at $40 mark, but the wait times were +15 minutes 3) All the other expenses were - surcharges ($4) + booking fee ($5). **Uber claims the booking fee is for regulatory, safety and operational costs** Which begs the question, what about the remaining amount. It is an insane mark-up either way! It is large scale robbery with super fat margins. 4) Lesson learnt: should have used the subway!
Welcome to Capitalism!
Short stock
Most of the times uber is charging twice the money Lyft would charge if not more
Calm down, public transit in NY is serviceable. Uber/Lyft is highway robbery here
Pun intended 🤔
The subway is 2.75
E train for ever and get out at WTC. Best $2.75 ever spent
Check your receipt, it has an exact breakdown. Sometimes you will feel the drivers get less is because the government takes up massive tolls, pickup fees at airport etc which get added to your fare.
Yep, it's government theft as usual.
Last time I did Uber to JFK $27 was congestion fee, tax, tolls, “black car fund” (Whatever that is). Check your receipt for the facts.
Mistake Number 1: taking an Uber in New York city. People use cabs and they priced in a very fair way. Uber was a good choice when they had shared rides. With that gone, why would anyone take Uber in the city?
Taxis are smelly and bad drivers, claim the meters broken
I like knowing the price upfront
For a 20 mile suburb ride to Seattle Tacoma airport costs me around $100+ these days. Insane.
I believe they do have target incentives
