Talking with a recruiter about L6 (staff) position at Uber. I understand this is analogous to senior staff (l7) at Google, so I'm a bit surprised by the low numbers she mentioned, namely 240 base Max and 175 k target refresh. She didn't pin down the range of the initial grant, but said first year tc would be under the 750k I said I wanted it for I were to move. Do these numbers look right? I would have thought the top 1% at Uber would be paid more.
Isn’t $750k high-end for Google L7?. Some other blind posts suggests it’s 90th percentile.
Note that although Uber says their L6 is equivalent to L7 at Google and FB, Google and FB consider Uber Staff to be L6 and they are mostly hired at L6.
I heard their refresher vests in 3 years. You might want to check.
No more.
Btw l6 is not top 1%. There's lots of l6 here
Levels can go +/-1 when you switch companies. It all depends on interview performance. Yes, some Uber L6s have gone to FB as E6, but so have Uber 5a’s gone to FB as E6 or FB E6 came in to Uber as 5b. Let’s not use anecdotes to draw conclusions. In terms of comp, 5b is ~500k so median L6 is ~25% more than that. They might have dialed offers down a bit closer to IPO, but at these higher levels, your comp will go as high as they want you.
This is not about anecdote. Facebook keeps an internal mapping. Uber L6 used to be considered E7, now it is considered E6.
Do they ask your current Uber level during interview? Else how can they knew
I heard L6 staff in Uber is supposed to lead/impact an org with 100 engineers. By definition it should be 1-2 L6 per 100 engineers, what’s the actual ratio in your org, ubers?
Refresh is shit at Uber. Make sure you get good initial grant. TC depends heavily on how you view Uber IPO.
How do you view the equity? Particular ly can you comment on your views of current common stock and preferred stock prices. Do you expect, as many seem to, that they will necessarily converge at IPO?
If you drink ubr koolaid then we'll be 200b company with stock tripling vs current 409a. If u think we are the next Snapchat, then stock will tumble and fall by 50% in 6 mo The truth is probably somewhere in between.
