I got an offer from Uber (L5a) recently and am expecting an E5 offer from FB. Uber's recruiter gave me numbers on the phone, not on paper, and I couldn't note down the breakdown, but from what I gather it comes down to around $406/year + they'll offer a signing bonus of around $60k. I assume that if FB does come back with an offer they will match (or the numbers will be close enough it will be foolish to decide based on just these numbers). Of the two, which would you recommend and why? With Uber I've heard that the culture is similar to Amazon which scares me (been at Amazon for six years and I want to run far far away). And with all the layoffs last year I hear that the morale is low and attrition is high. But I haven't read great things about FB's culture on Blind either; apparently there's a lot of pressure to show impact, which could lead to a cutthroat/non-collaborative culture, which sounds very upsetting. And outside of that the WLB in general might be worse at FB. Other concerns: both these companies are coming under a lot of regulatory scrutiny. But at least FB is very profitable and has enough of a moat to survive any scares. Is Uber going to survive in the long run/is there any upside left in the stock? What do y'all think? Thing with FB though is that I don't really use their products other than WhatsApp (and sometimes Messenger) but I'm not their target customer I guess. Sometimes I do wonder about the impact of their products on society but I do believe they're trying their best; they have very hard problems to solve. Of the two which would you pick and why, if the offers are exactly the same? YOE: 6 TC: 280k
If numbers are completely the same, Uber has a better eng culture iāve heard (i know people at both companies), but thatās sometimes just anecdotal.
Do you know your group in Uber?
I do, and it seems like a decent org with a good manager. I'm worried about naming it though because it'll make it very easy to identify me. Let's just say the team works to help multiple other eng orgs within Uber.
If it's developer platform, the org is solid with a lot of great people, managers, and org leaders.
FBās offer will be similar or little higher.
There will be a pressure to show impact with high comp, take it or leave it. FB at least there's a growth!
Uber 2.0 is not Amazon anymore. Culture is ok. The FBer's response is hilarious, who give you such confidence this is not a tough decision.
Come to Snap. DM me if you want to learn more.
I'd still choose FB, but I'm biased. Read Ben Thomson's latest article on FB: https://stratechery.com/2021/facebook-political-problems/ Anecdotal evidence from Blind: People leave Uber to come to FB, reverse is not that frequent. (Yes, I just made this up based on my own perceptions š)
Let's put TC aside. Uber is obviously way riskier with no greater reward. I don't see any decent upside with Uber. Some decent growth in Eats from covid. Long term doesn't look promising. Go with FB.
Iāll play devilās advocateā¦ there are some trends that may trigger another growth spurt for Uber ā WFH/Hybrid work model means more people can skip owning a car, travel/play/leisure opening up again, Uber is developing Freight line of business, young generation has no want/need for a car; no one I know under 30 wants to drive. On the flip side, what does FB have on the horizon other than their VR/Metaverse play? Their ads will keep bringing in $$$ but they are losing so much political/public support it should at least raise some level of concern for their future revenue.
Eh that's anecdotal. The only time I don't want to drive is when I'm heading to bars/clubs. Same with my friends. Having a car is way more convenient.
FB - different teams have different WLB. Choose your team wisely and youāll be fine.
What teams have good WLB?
I wonāt say āgoodā, because maybe itās still a lot of work compared to other companies. I can at least say that Ads , user facing product teams have it much worse and thatās expected. Infra / internal services side itās a little chill. At the same time, if one is looking for faster growth, you have ample opportunities to show āimpactā in the teams with much worse WLB.
Tough decision, huh? You should choose Uber.
