Someone I know is considering two offers. Uber vs Amazon? Any input is much appreciated as far as which company is better and/or which offer is better Uber(ATG) offer: Software Engineer(1) Base: 120,000 Target Cash:11,000 Target Equity Refresh: 26k Start On Equity: 125,000 valued at like $33 Amazon(Kindle) offer: Base Pay: 123,000 Sign-On Payment Yr 1: 29,000 over 1 payment(s) Sign-On Payment Yr 2: 22,000 over 12 payment(s) RSUs:70

Atg?
Advanced Technology Group(Self-Driving Vehicles)
Well my current rule of thumb of Amazon is unless someone is offering me 1.5 to twice the TC for Amazon, I won't consider it unless there are other factors that can influence the decision.
May I ask why that rule is specific to Amazon?
Yeah. Mostly since the stock price is increasing way too quickly for me to justify going somewhere else without covering the stock growth. If you look in last 2 years G almost doubled, Amazon tripled.
For a level 1 engineer, the pay package should be irrelevant since the variance is low between companies. I would index on career growth potential. I think Uber being at an earlier stage has more learning opportunities with cool things to work on and still has a lot of upside from the equity, the two factors as to why I chose to join and I’m happy with my decision. Anecdotally I had one friend at Amazon who quit after a year or so because they were bored. Probably can’t go wrong either way, if after a year they don’t like it, it will be so easy to find the next job with that experience.
I totally agree with this. You should try to get to senior and above as fast as possible and then optimize for earning. Also, a growing companies offer more opportunities for promotions over mature ones.
Uber

I would go for Amazon, specially if it's in Seattle VS bay area
