I wanted to see some opinions on the following companies. For Uber and Microsoft, they are in Seattle/Redmond. Uber is the only one that can match my current comp. The other two offers are lesser than my current comp but fairly close to each other. I’m looking primarily for a good WLB and a product that I won’t get bored in. Basically something that can keep me focused for 40 hours a week. Uber Pros Better compensation Golang Interesting product Cons Not sure if permanent remote Not profitable yet Layoffs Unsure of gig economy future Digital Ocean Pros 100% remote IPO potential Interesting problems and products Cons Not profitable yet Microsoft ODSP or Identity Pros 50% remote Best WLB Best 401k match Cons Enterprise stack Lower compensation Probably slower growth 240k TC and 2.5 yoe
Just curious, why moving from Facebook? I was at Uber, I would avoid it for at least 6 months. Not because of layoffs but because they are moving most of their engineering to India to lower costs. So a lot of the projects will move out. They've got a new cto and I would wait to see his plans of cost cutting.
You are wong if you think bigger projects are going to India, if anything only the left over / less important projects are going to India.
I feel once projects start moving, it's a slippery slope. Start with the smaller projects, evaluate the costs saved. Then slowly move some core teams and so on and so on.
MIcrosoft is just killing it as a company. I’d say that’s a major strength; I wouldn’t underestimate or undervalue this in today’s world. WLB is hit or miss at the company. I heard that people in Identity fight a lot of high visibility fires (very critical part of MS) and some teams in Office have to work across time zones, which sometimes can mean meetings at odd hours. Benefits as a whole is among the best in industry.
I definitely agree with you and would say Microsoft is the safer option and more reliable. I’m leaning towards Uber though because of that reason. I’m okay with the risks of its business model and potential layoffs.
