But now seeing some negative news on Uber , I am rethinking. Things like CEO’s email on cost cutting , slow hiring, company is in loss since 3 years , stock value sinking . I can also see that currently there r negative news around many companies (Amazon , meta, google etc). I am mainly worried abt if I join Uber and Der will be layoff in future. Is lay-off common in Uber india ??? Expecting unbiased and genuine suggestions on my dilemma.
No idea about Uber, but Microsoft stocks, if this is for 4 years, can be way better. Base is alright tho!
Microsoft per year stock 21
Even I am joining Uber at end of this month. Initially, the news did scare me , but If I think about it, uber india engineering layoffs would probably be the last thing. Also, it's good Uber is accepting the issue, and wanting to fix it.
Yup, same thoughts from my end too. They did not touch India Engg during 2020 layoffs. Even now they wont touch any Engg at all globally, probably they would reduce hiring and remove some marketing teams at worst case. Engg replacement is very hard, that would be last thing any tech company would touch.
It’s in news that Uber India is hiring 500 new engineers this year https://wap.business-standard.com/article-amp/companies/uber-ramps-up-india-hiring-to-hire-500-engineers-for-its-tech-centres-122051101140_1.html
You dont need to worry if you are joining Uber India. I will also join soon. Take from my end, 1. Uber as a business is doing good. Last quarter loss is due to bad investment (Didi, Grab etc). Their revenue is growing at good rate and they are already EBITDA profitable. 2. Uber is reducing cost (might slow down hiring in US and reduce marketing activity) so that they can start showing profit. Based on their existing Q1 performance this is easily doable by cutting costs. I guess Uber CEO want to ensure that they have enough free cash flow for the turbulent times i.e recession etc. From point 2, it also means more head count in India ( i confirmed the same with Indian Sr SDM as well as TA's). You get 3 engineers in India at the cost of 1 US engineer, so it makes more sense for Uber to move the head count to India to get work done. Uber stock price is close to 52 weeks low and from existing Q1 report (ignoring the bad investment) Q2 results must be promising and it has good growth potential (but it still carries a risk, heck which company carries no risk btw ?) I would go and join and there is low probability that Uber eats org would be touched even during turbulent time as Dara is planning to invest heavily on Eats (it came out as Pandemic winner out of all business units in Uber). To add In Uber you get good peers and good engineering culture to grow more in your career.
Thanks buddy, you have done a great analysis. This deserves a post of its own
Good analysis. I am also joining this month declining Meta offer outside India. This is difficult time but it can be very rewarding in future.
Negotiate with msft show them Uber offer.
Not for L62 maybe for L63 OP can get more. L5A at Uber is one level up from L62 of MSFT, so it makes no sense for MSFT to compete the offer. Also for Op's YoE i.e >= 7 yrs joining as SDE2 / L62 makes no sense when they have offer for senior software engineer.
33L RSUs are for first 2 years? I heard it's 30-30-20-20 vesting?
it is equal vesting in India for new offers.
It is monthly vesting post probation period for 4 years
Uber announced today, hiring 500 more engineers in India by year end.
Op did you join Uber? Can i dm with some questions?
@op can you please elaborate a bit what exact negative news you are hearing?
