Long post. ---------------- Dear Blinders, I am facing a difficult situation and need some guidance. I plan to consult an attorney tomorrow but would also appreciate various perspectives. I was laid off from Google in February and have recently received an offer from #Amazon (Ring/Blink). My H1B visa application has been filed, and I am waiting for the receipt before I can start work. Although I have urged the recruiters to expedite my start date, it looks like I might only be able to begin by the end of April. The urgent issue is that my mother has a heart condition and requires bypass surgery soon, necessitating my immediate travel to India. My dad is with my mom but my dad has cataract condition and he is also due for surgery and may not be able to support my mother's surgery without my presence. However, securing a visa appointment for stamping is challenging, and there's a possibility I could be stranded in India for two to three months. One option I'm considering the possibility of joining Amazon US and travel to India next month and work remotely from India for a couple of months. However, given Amazon’s culture, I am unsure how supportive they might be, especially since I would be a new employee. Another option I am considering is to extend the start date by 2 months and travel to India this week before my start date at Amazon and return based on the job offer's timeline. However, I am also concerned that Amazon might rescind the offer if I travel now and if I am moving my start date by 2 months. If that happens, I would have to continue my job search from India and move whenever I have new offer from some other employer. An additional complication is my family situation—I have a spouse and two children, and I need to figure out if they can stay in the U.S. while I travel without a running payroll in US. I'm caught in a web of complexities and need some advice on how best to proceed.
Trying to understand the question about wife and children. Are you concerned about how they will survive financially or are they on dependent visa and you are concerned their visa will be invalid if your status is jeopardized?
Financial is not the issue. I am more concerned around the visa and valid status for them
I don’t know the answer but you will sort this out. An immigration attorney will present your options and give you the best strategy to approach it. I really hope it works out for you and your family OP. Speedy recovery to both of your parents in India 🙏
🙏
Knowing Amazon (I was 15 years in Amazon), I would suggest extend your joining else u will become pip fodder
So taking long leave after joining is risky... Thanks for your suggestion
OP Are you still in Google payroll? If not, you should absolutely not try to fly back to the US as if you're still working for Google.
No. My last date was in Feb. Currently not working and have only one offer from Amazon. I will be returning based on new job offer only.
I am not very sure about the answer. But you can get visa slots through agents quicker just in case you need to. Wishing a speedy recovery for your parents 🙏.
I have heard horror stories of agents that agents are asking multiple fold money or literally blackmailing. This is illegal also to share your user ID and password with agents to try the visa slot booking. Not sure, if I really want to go this way
If you have an option of sending your wife and kid for the help, send them first but I would double check doctors confidence on criticality of the surgery. Get your receipt while in US, and then travel because you are not planning to come back within 60 days of layoff date. You mentioned Visa stamping-will it be Dropbox?
Having a wife and kid here will definitely help you if something does come up. Talk to a lawyer. It’s complicated.
You mean take them with me? It doesn't seems a right option because my son is Junior this year and he has do his mandatory internship and prep for college admission. It's too complicated
