We are all educated people, yet some of us fall for the dumbass "unions lower wages" propaganda. Lets even set aside the fact that unionized workers have a higher median income, and police unions get away with wanton murder. I only ask you to consider this: it doesn't matter what you and I think about unions. The C suite higher ups don't like them, they know it means more power for workers. That alone should convince you that unions are good. #tech
Unions are fundamentally a good thing. Look to Europe, where unions are powerful and generally not corrupt. Don't be misled into thinking the stereotypical American union with corrupt leadership is what unions have to be. (I grew up in Germany and worked there for years before moving to the US for the big TC. I was shocked to learn how people perceive unions here.)
Ok 🤡
Why did you move to the US if unions are so great? You think you could make this kind of TC if companies couldn't you lay you off on the spot? The risk reward ratio would be all skewed and they'd find ways around it.
The C suites would love to have low paid commodity union coders. Most of our jobs are still too specialized. Maybe chatgpt will make your dream come true. Now TC or GTFO.
I hope unions don’t happen. But history finds a way to repeat.
Ok, so why aren't C suite starting unions and inviting everyone to join?
Police officers and firemen have unions because they could literally die on the job. There is a very loud group of tech workers that support the idea of unions but I’m skeptical that the majority of tech workers want it. Despite this current downturn, tech jobs will continue to be in demand for the foreseeable future, our bargaining power is our skillset that sets us apart from unskilled workers. What’s the point in paying dues for a club to add red tape and limit mobility within the industry?
Unions are ducking awful. Have you ever worked for one?
If they are awful for workers, why does Amazon CEO keep trying to prevent them from popping up?
Unions are lose/lose/win the losers are the company, the consumers, and any newcomers to the field. I'd count most employees as losers too because they pay dues only to have their growth stifled by union clowns. The only winners are the union clowns.
Unions incentivize nepotism over efficiency. They commoditize workers and make it so the elected "good ole boys" decide how much everyone should make. No thanks. There is no us vs them. Plus have you looked at all the great wages in Europe? Unions really doing a good job securing purchasing power for employees 😂
So not being commoditized means getting fired whenever, with no regulations on workers rights?
Agree Bloomberg
Not a fan of unions at all. As an employee in a top paying company, that will be terrible for me. The supposed benefits to pay are (1) in low paying industries and (2) that research is very imprecise. Know quite a few people in unionized positions - wouldn't switch places with any of them
I’m not fan of unions, too many bad experiences in my own country and region. But I think that, if managed well, they could be a strong political force against big companies and conglomerates. I am however pessimistic and think that corruption always ends up winning and a working union is only a dream :(
C suites don’t like them because it’s gonna drive the company down the shitter.
It's not going to drive down the company to the shitter, it's going to drive C-suite compensation to the shitter and they hate knowing or even thinking that they aren't better than others
Lol sure
every pro union thread I share same my info and same question: I am 3yoe with BS, I make 350k$/y remotely, get 20+pto, choice days, recharge, 0 deductible insurance with ~100% coverage now, why should I join union? Please share place with union that offers even remotely close to similar conditions? and at each thread I get silent response
Why do these dumb post keep popping up? 🤔 did Reddit just find blind and flooding it.
Do you have a counterpoint for my argument?
I am surprised so many people think it’s good.
