Have to choose between the University of Toronto (55k USD/year) and Purdue (43k USD/year). I know that Canadian SWE salaries are lower, and want to work in the US. However, I feel that UofT has more prestige associated with it. Any suggestions? What do employers think about both of the Universities?
Neither of these are target schools. Go to your state school instead.
The only state school offer I have right now is SJSU (30k USD/year) and they have minimal research output.
I’d go to the one you like most - you have your whole adult life to worry about your career CC to Berkeley is a cheap, good option also
Toronto so you can get a MSc under Hinton
Just looked him up. Impressive amount of accomplishments and papers!
Hinton doesn’t take grad students anymore afaik. Source: I did UofT EngSci
If you care about where you’ll be living for the next 4 years, Toronto is a really great city to live in.
What's your opinion on the tech scene in Toronto?
It’s definitely not at good as the Bay Area. It’s getting better, and it’s not bad, but it doesn’t meet my expectations yet.
Yonge/Dundas is where the action is. Or Yorkville Four Seasons.
I guess you don't really live in Toronto...
toronto is an awesome city to live in however the only canadian uni worth their salt in cs is waterloo (although get ready to have 0 social life there). i say this as a mcgill grad
UofT CS is pretty good lol
so is mcgill’s but neither can compare to waterloo and their insane coop network and reputation
I had to make the decision between Waterloo and Purdue in 2015 and decided with Purdue. Looking back, Waterloo probably would have been just as good if not better and it was significantly cheaper (Canadian citizen). However, at Purdue, every major employer comes to the career fairs, solid curriculum, etc. I would pick Purdue over UofT.
Just to expand on this - I went to work at a FAANG after graduation at Purdue and graduated in 3 years which saved a lot of money (it’s pretty easy to graduate in 3 years there) VS Waterloo would have been 5 years so that’s another thing to consider
Can I dm you to talk to you about your time at Purdue?
Are you born in India? If yes, then UofT otherwise Purdue
There are plenty of Indians and other international students in Purdue
Do you even understand why I asked OP to say his / her nationality or just here to say the obvious ???
UofT comp sci worked out for me, all the major tech companies like MSFT, Uber, FB, Google etc had onsite recruiting fairs. Google did on campus interviews instead of phone screens, invited us out for dinner, which was pretty efficient. If you’re a Canadian you can very easily work in the states after graduation if you want high TC. All the interviews I did was for US based roles. I was also a Canadian so it was dirt cheap for me. Something like 4K for first year, 16k for 2nd to 4th year.
Agreed
Waterloo > UofT, if the former is an option. Take the opinions here with a grain of salt, given the pandemic and shift towards “remote” friendly may alter hiring practices and preferences going forward. Aka, there could be a shift in expanding campus presence for certain US schools that align with new office locations in lieu of Canada.
