I just noticed that they are still accepting students for fall 2020. What's the reputation? Is it a target school? My goal is to join a firm in Chicago or NYC for quantitative research. The program doesnt require GRE so looks good to apply to. TC : 0 (Past intern, currently unemployed) #datascience #trading #tech
DS program will not help you in joining a Quant firm.
I have spoken to multiple Quant research recruiters and have been told any masters in a field like engineering, math, stats or ds is enough. I like ds a lot and therefore want to do it. Plus wanted to use my masters school to build network and recognition
MS programs are not built for networking. Sad to say it but mostly MBA courses will get you proper networking.
I will suggest to do OMSCS from GTech . It cost only 7 K and it has the best curriculum . Current & Ongoing OMS Courses *CS 6035: Introduction to Information Security *CS 6200: Introduction to Operating Systems (formerly CS 8803 O02) *CS 6210: Advanced Operating Systems CS 6238: Secure Computer Systems (page coming soon!) *CS 6250: Computer Networks CS 6260: Applied Cryptography (page coming soon!) *CS 6262: Network Security *CS 6263: Intro to Cyber Physical Systems Security (formerly CS 8803 O07) CS 6265: Information Security Lab *CS 6290: High Performance Computer Architecture *CS 6291: Embedded Systems Optimization (formerly CS 8803 O04) *CS 6300: Software Development Process *CS 6310: Software Architecture and Design *CS 6340: Software Analysis *CS 6400: Database Systems Concepts and Design *CS 6440: Intro to Health Informatics *CS 6460: Educational Technology *CS 6475: Computational Photography *CS 6476: Computer Vision *CS 6515: Intro to Graduate Algorithms (formerly CS 8803 GA) *CS 6601: Artificial Intelligence *CS 6750: Human-Computer Interaction *CS 7637: Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence - Cognitive Systems *CS 7638: Artificial Intelligence for Robotics (formerly CS 8803 O01) *CS 7639: Cyber-Physical Design and Analysis (formerly CS 8803 O09) *CS 7641: Machine Learning *CS 7642: Reinforcement Learning (formerly CS 8803 O03) *CS 7646: Machine Learning for Trading CS 8803 O08: Compilers - Theory and Practice *CS 8803 O10: AI, Ethics, and Society CS 8803 O11: Information Security Lab - System and Network Defenses *CSE 6220: Intro to High-Performance Computing *CSE 6242: Data and Visual Analytics *CSE 6250: Big Data for Health Informatics ISYE 6402: Time Series Analysis *ISYE 6420: Bayesian Statistics ISYE 6501: Intro to Analytics Modeling ISYE 6644: Simulation (page coming soon!) You can choose more ML courses and tons of choices ..
These courses sound amazing. I was looking for an on campus program so I could do internships as cracking intern interviews are much easier than ft
For quant firms I strongly rec CS or Stats MS and not data science or analytics degrees tbh
Was deciding between stats and DS tbh. Thanks for the recommendation !
Quant firms want highly technical people and not just plug and chug work which alot of DS programs and DS positions provide. Everyone is on the DS bandwagon because it is easier than any of the other fields to study as it is a watered down version. The DS programs I have seen are not quantitative enough for quantitative trading.
I wouldn't recommend Masters in DS right now. The market isn't good and has been steadily declining. P.S: I'm a masters in DS myself.
Are you a data scientist at Amazon? Many data scientists/analysts are getting laid off during this pandemic.
Is that necessarily true? I think the proper way to phrase it: Many people in general are being laid off. Some data scientist are as well. I don’t think DS is a particularly large portion of the layoffs though
Why not CS?
DS is a meme.
UW DS and MSIS programs are pumping out hundreds of juniors into the market, it’s like a puppy mill out here with very saturated entry level supply and no demand (except for the occasional bi/analytics types of roles). Source: I am a DS in Seattle with 6 yoe
So true. DS job market is saturated and over hyped.
University of Washington stats is very good. "Data science" is not a real degree. We used to interview people with "data science" degrees, but now we just reject new grads in data science. They all fail miserably.

Quitting this Slave life
How much does it cost?
I think it's 2-3k per course. But money is not an issue as I want to do DS MS regardless. Plus a part of it will be covered my MSFT too when I start soon
Is it online masters in DS?
