Unsexy companies

Jul 25, 2017 399 Comments

We all know what the shiny, cool companies in the area are.... But what are examples of "unsexy" companies where the people who work there seem really happy? For example, I have a friend who worked with McDonald's digital strategy team, and he loved it.

@jadziadax Nice! How's the culture there? Always assumed agencies were super cutthroat
      Jul 26, 2017
    • CAA / Eng jadziadax
I'm in the product development group and have limited interactions with the agents. Agent culture is totally different and separate from tech culture from what I've been told. I think it helps that we are salaried whereas they earn commission. My department is super chill though, and I've never worked with better people. We get to use whatever tech stacks we want and there's very little red tape. Leadership works really hard to support personal growth and encourage innovation and we basically have a flat org structure outside of our tech leads. It's like an alternate corporate reality lol.

My mom used to work at Symantec and she had the manager from hell (didn't know what she was doing/did it wrong, but insisted she was the shit) 🙁

Another vote for Walmart. You might get shit for saying you work at Walmart, but you get to work with a modern stack for the second largest online retailer in the USA.

Great work life balance and awesome tech stack, and I am learning rapidly. A lot of coasters and low performers here, and pretty poor communication. Pros outweigh the cons for me.

keep aside big company politics and processes, Cisco is a great place to work. Complex products with great architectures and an amazing work life balance, but a slightly less than average pay. Fair deal for me.
      Jul 26, 2017
    • Depends on the org; I am happy. — not many are though.
      Jul 26, 2017
    • Btw pay is not that bad; it is around 70-80% of tier 1 companies; totally worth the work-life-balance it provides.

Basically, I've found that any company doing non-consumer app work has a generally better lifestyle. Sure, it's cool to tell your friends you built a new dog shit scooping app, but it pales in comparison to being given stock that's worth ACTUAL MONEY™.
