I recently shared my experience at AWS in another thread. Thought will share it with a bigger audience. The management sucks big time at Amazon with zero transparency. With elimination of Tech Assessor, every cat and dog is now able to become L6 if they can be a "Yes Man" to their manager. I joined my team right when it started and I was able to learn a lot and progress career wise. But never really enjoyed the benefits of becoming L6 as I quit after my 4th year vest. My skip who hired me and to whom I used to report, is good, but he was more reliant on my manager. So he never took the pain to resolve any managerial issues. Some of the highlights from the convos that I had with my manager(which made me leave). "You hold too much power and you need force multiply" . I created the entire stack that my team uses and I take ownership when there is an opportunity. Rest of the team wants to be spoon fed and dont take ownership which the idiot doesnt understand. "I know it is difficult for you with kids and I believe you wont be able to perform well" This is after I had my 1st kid. Fucker assumed I will not be able to perform well. On the contrary I pretty much delivered all our releases and went GA. "Welcome back from your paternity vacation. The xyz that you created helped us a lot in collaborating with mountain team" Asshole awarded my teammate for that job of mine. All she did was click a button and send the generated collaterals to the "mountain" team while I was on paternity vacation. "Please do a knowledge transfer of xyz to Mr PM. He will maintain it from now on" Mr PM was promoted to L6 this quarter. Manager cites the xyz work of mine which I completed 2 years back and everyone in my team knows. Problem is my skip openly told me " I dont want to spoil the peace with Mr DM, my manager" Definitely the higher management doesnt value the leaf level engineers who actually do the job and guide the managers. Overall I learned a lot be it technical wise as well as managerial wise. Joined meta a week back and hope its good. BTW, the AWS org is Redshi(f)t. Current TC E6, $550K, LCOL #aws #awsredshift #softwarecareers #hardwarecareers#engineering #software #swe
That sounds like AWS. Too many incompetent people in management playing politics
is this the same in amazon commercial side ?
I dont think this is same across all the teams. Not all managers are bad. I know some who are really reasonable and just.
congrats on the E6 offer and thanks for sharing your experience. where were you before btw?
AWS is the worst org.
Yup, also leaving AWS. Didn’t like it
