Hudson River Trading?

What’s the deal with HRT? I feel this company is overrated. Before you trolls and flakes start your thing - let me say this… I like the company but I just don’t feel it’s in the same league as Jump, Jane Street, DE Shaw, etc. I’ve witnessed smarter talent at Google and FB. They have a great reputation for their quants, but honestly I don’t think the opinion is the same for their engineering. I personally interacted with / know a few and I have felt they’re about ok. Definitely they’re not bad at all, but not outright geniuses like the ones in jump, Jane, 2S, citadel, etc. I just feel the new grads and interns on blind blew the company out of proportion lol! Thoughts? (Keep it clean. Comment only if you know stuff. This is just an inquiry and not trying to mud sling. I personally am considering HRT as my future opportunity.)

Actually many of those companies are overrated.

Snap Boxer # 1 OP Aug 23, 2021

I feel the same. Their TC is no longer a bump, infact HRT senior engineer numbers are like less than top end google L4. But atleast they seem interesting in terms of talent and culture. I like finance if not for that I’d never consider them.

Facebook 🍆+💉->🎃 Aug 23, 2021

Cultures there are garbage. Defensive arrogant shits.

NortonLifeLock oocla Aug 23, 2021

HRT is a personal choice for everyone. It's up to you and your medical professional whether you want to transition.

Google joojler Jul 13, 2022

Why medical professional?

Bloomberg Anon2714 Jun 25, 2023

Stress probably

Hudson River Trading clang++ Aug 23, 2021

tbf recent growth has lowered the hiring bar quite a bit. Also TC gonna be on the downhill because of it, but still much better than 2S or probably average Citadel

Snap Boxer # 1 OP Aug 23, 2021

Hmm.. thanks for that info. I liked it when you guys were < 300. Missed the boat I think :( How’s the performance of HRT otherwise? I imagine everyone killed it last year. DRW and Jane I was told made the biggest $$$

NortonLifeLock oocla Aug 23, 2021

DRW, JS, Citadel, etc are all much bigger than HRT in terms of headcount. By that logic shouldn't their hiring bar and TC be even lower? 🤔

Were the interviews harder than fb?

Facebook leaving fb Aug 23, 2021

How much did they offer?

Hudson River Trading JWNv76 Aug 23, 2021

The talent I've seen has been very impressive and the TC has been excellent. From my experience, the company culture is significantly better than places like Citadel (whose culture and wlb seems to be the poster child of the industry here) and has actually been one of the best parts of working here. YMMV of course, but I'd definitely recommend HRT over many of the other companies mentioned in this thread.

I'll fight you

Amazon social_arb Aug 24, 2021

What about the elitism stuff though ? Many claim that HRT is biased towards folks from MIT/Harvard primarily and others have a lower chance even as a developer

Hudson River Trading OmLW23 Aug 24, 2021

Historically we were way more biased towards those schools / when a small company we only spent effort recruiting at a few top schools because when you are only hiring like 3 software engineers from campus in a year (the actual number for 2017) you don't need to look as far. Now we are hiring a lot more and so we have had to change tactics and practices

Bloomberg Anon2714 Jun 25, 2023

I have 10 YOE at Bloomberg and wasn't even given a phone screen. I assumed it was because I didn't go to a top school but I dunno
