I am not happy with my current conpensation. I recently interviewed at Google in Toronto and received an offer. I am not super excited about the google team and genuinely like my work at Shopify. i was wondering if anyone had ever used a competing offer to get a pay bump? Is this frowned upon? how would you approach this situation. I truly feel the opportunity cost in searching for my replacement would be more than just matching the offer. your advise is appreciated. Tell them u really enjoy your work and love your teammates, and show how appreciated u r to have the opportunity to accomplish what you have at Shopify so far. Show you really want to stay but it's just very hard to swallow the 80k difference (or whatever it is) with what the market can offer you. Ask politely if there's anything they can do Remember to show empathy with your manager and stand on the same boat against the HR/Finance. Your manager needs to fight for you against them so show your support and make their job easier. Your manager's incentive is to make you stay, not to make u stay at the lowest comp possible, so do assume you're on the same boat. This works the best if u r on good terms with the company/manager.
Timing works out in your favour right now. Since we’re all doing impact reviews, the earlier you have a conversation about this with your lead, the more likely they can advocate for you before the cycle ends :).
It’ll work if you play the if you don’t match this I’m gonna leave card, but it looks hella awkward if they shut you down then you don’t leave
Right I have to be ready to leave, which I am. I’m just asking what the best way to start that conversation is without sounding like a total dick.
Just bring it up heart to heart in a 1:1, say the offer is a big raise yadada, and just seem genuine. Google Kitchener? L4?
