Folks at Apple: is it possible to use a Linux machine while working at apple or does everybody use a Mac? Does it matter what the role is? e.g. infrastructure vs. iOS development TC 190K YOE 3 #apple
Not possible
Cool, thanks
Hmm... Possible depending on what projects you are working on + how you are using it. (Uses Linux but with serious limitations)
I'm wondering if it's possible to do development on Linux, i.e. use it on a workstation or a laptop. My setup has developed over a long time, and it would be a struggle to adapt to macOS. Hence the question.
Are you at apple btw? I can't tell because blind says New
I find Mac much easier to use for development anyway, but I'm sure they have linux VMs.
It's definitely a matter of taste. I have friends in the same boat as you, but my last internship using a mac, it was miserable.
oh sweet intern. use your MacBook and be happy. it’s a Unix machine. thank the lord you aren’t forced to use windows.
Its just not possible even if you got it approved somehow. Most of the tools that we use on daily basis like VPN etc won't be available on Linux. Not to mention we have our own version of softwares/builds
Ah cool, thanks.
You can’t adapt to a new OS at 3 YOE? Really? If that’s genuinely the case then maybe tech is not the right field for you. You are going to need to reinvent your career almost once every five years if you are to succeed in tech, adapting to a new OS is least of the worries.
lol get a life buddy.
For installing arch linux and satisfying your ego?
Not possible for your personal machine but lots of teams have Linux clusters they can access via SSH. I’m not sure what the advantage of Linux on desktop is anyway..

Lol, I remember there's a thread on slack where someone said that they are leaving Apple because they cannot do OSS and the law team is simply taking forever (a candidate who joined 1-2 months back) And you want to use Linux there?
Apple definitely contribute to OSS (WebKit, Cups, LLVM, a lot more), and they use Linux on their servers. That's a different story from allowing individuals to contribute to OSS. It sounds like everybody there uses a mac though so there's my answer.
Forget about contributing to OSS, try seeking approval to contribute to your own GitHub public repo. People there are also scared to leave a comment, leave aside a commit
