I was recently contacted by VMware recruiter and was told that a zoom discussion is scheduled next week with a Staff Engineer. The recruiter told me that this is going to be a technical discussion. I checked with her if its a coding round and was told that its a technical discussion. I am not sure what is going to be discussed in the meeting? Its quite ambiguous. Will he vet my resume by asking questions about my background? Or it can be anything.
This is probably a verbal technical interview. Q/A on situations,. technical processes, tool knowledge and skills assessment. Or someone is going to ask you a bunch of questions with a scenario to see how you respond. Any Staff Engineers that want to jump in and explain your BU process?
Thanks for your response. Can you please share any examples.
I also asked about the team but no answer.
MTS4 here but should be able to help. I'm in the cloud platform BU, and have done a number of these initial screening calls. The whole purpose is to decide if you're worth even bringing in for the full interview obviously, but how that's assessed is up to each interviewer. I never had a discussion on how to run these, I just started getting calendar invites for them. I'd say content is heavily dependent on the role you're going for and the BU (as well as expertise of the interviewer). I'd go over your resume with you to see if you show any expertise in the shit you say you've done and if you can communicate. Then I'd give short coding problems to assess your problem solving abilities and force you to talk through solutions. Most probably do something similar, but you never know what you're going to get. If you know your stuff this should be the least stressful interview (not overly complex), but also the one where we weed out the most.

Depends on the hiring team. But usually, if a staff engineer is assigned, he will ask technical questions and maybe give you some tasks to solve. You can always ask the staffing partner to provide you with more info on what will be probed.
I did try to clarify with the staffing partner and recruiter but was told it's a technical discussion. Not much details. When you say tasks to solve as in coding questions?
