VMware offer questions / expectations

Hello I'm expecting a staff sde off from VMware in the Seattle area can anyone give me some expectations around what the comp breakdown could be? I heard my interview feedback was really good and that recently for staff level roles they've had to regularly get exceptions for the offer they want to extend. I've heard that the target bonus is 17% of base salary, how common is it to get this bonus and what's the range? How's the wlb? How's the company outlook? I'm a bit nervous about moving from AWS to VMware in terms of brand value for any future employment opportunities and. #tech #vmware #offer #vmwarebase #vmwaresalary #faang

FAANG company? You mean Amazon lol ๐Ÿ™„ With regards to your questions: bonus is usually 100% of your target. If it is not, youโ€™re not meeting basic expectations. Rest everything depends on your team.

yeah Im in AWS currently, I fully understand Amazon isn't a tier 1 company and below the rest of FAANG, I would guess tho in a recruiter's eye the brand value of AWS is higher than vmware's though and that is something I'm considering with this offer. I also don't know if VMware is a growing company it's stock is the same price it was in 2019, so I'm concerned the equity portion of my comp could be stagnant or fall.

Don't meant any disrespect to VMware or to make AWS seem great, I edited my post to be more clear

VMware in general treats itโ€™s employees well and has a good share of smart engineers. Being an enterprise product company with a large partner ecosystem and having fairly complex requirement means that the decision making and execution can be complex. Overall you will be happier than Amazon.

Personally my wlb at Amazon is great my team is great so I'm happy here. Are VMware's internal tools good, are their dev environments and dev tools good? Does it operate like a top tier tech company?

If target bonus is 17%, I think you're looking at an SMTS offer and not Staff 1 offer. SMTS is one level below Staff 1. If SMTS, this is the absolute highest I have seen although there might be exceptions. Base - $195k Stock - $250k (that person had a Phd), otherwise $200k Joining bonus - $50k Keep in mind these are the absolute highest numbers and you may need to negotiate and or have other offers. If it is a Staff 1 offer, you can roughly add 10% to the base and about $50k - $100k for stock.

I was told the offer was Staff 1 but we shall see once I get the numbers. The offer you're describing is considerably above what I'm seeing on levels.fyi however which gives me hope VMware can be more competitive than I originally expected

This seems like a $450K offer is the top of band for SMTS for someone with a PhD
