VMware on AWS sounds very funny to me. I think its for the folks or companies who don’t want to deal with AWS or understand public cloud technologies. Why no just migrate your vmware workloads in EC2? If you have solid technical understanding of your apps running on vmware ESXi you can easily migrate them to AWS EC2 or even containerize them to migrate to EKS/ECS. Please enlighten me folks. And VMware engineers - please no hard feelings. #faang #amazon #nvidia #vmware #facebook #google #microsoft
You mean vmware vsphere infrastructure on aws? Virtualized ESXi servers, vcenter on EC2?
Yes
Vendor lock-in to a public cloud
You are a young one my friend.
Not as easy as you think. I read something once that stated a migration from ESXi/vSphere to EC2/GCE (not even talking about containers) costs $1 million per VM. That adds up fast. VMware realizes plenty of folks want the “have your cake and eat it too” world of all the benefits of the on-prem SDDC arch in the cloud. It’s clearly got flaws (having to dedicate at least 2 hosts can make for a lot of wasted vCPU, vSAN isn’t elastic at all the way EBS/PD are, who needs NSX when you’re already in a VPC), but a lot of enterprise folks have ancient shit that is tier 1 production but they also want to do as little as possible to maintain it. Also- technically vSphere does support K8s with Tanzu though it’s a different ballgame than as if one were using GKE. I don’t work on GCVE and I think long term it’s a penny wise pound foolish way for enterprises to be in the cloud beyond say 3-5 years but the business is growing very well.
They will tackle that redesign as soon as all the COBAL replacement projects are finished.
Don’t forget about vendor support, cloud portability and hybrid cloud support
