This valuation is now 18B correct? They might lay off more people if covid continues the whole of next year.
Company is doing just fine, don't listen to people who are not in the company because it's understandable they don't know how well we are doing. Business is fueled by long term domestic stays and the populations overall preference to book an Airbnb Vs a hotel due to health and safety reasons. There is also a lot of demand for remote work so you can understand an Airbnb fulfills that gap much better than staying 2 months at a hotel to work remotely. Unfortunately as you can understand we cannot reveal the internal price on a public forum, your recruiter will be able to inform you on the overall value of your equity package. My advice is get this offer because our internal valuation is much lower right now than what it will be after IPO. It is the equivalent of buying a high growth long term stock at a discount. Regarding the employees that have left, everyone leaves for their own reasons and being part of an industry that was severely hit by the pandemic is not easy and did create churn. It's a good time to join now as you will have opportunities to shape the company in a meaningful way and from all the companies I've worked for or have friends working at, Airbnb has by far the best culture. It is night and day from Amazon, you'll be amazed at how nice people are. Go for it
My colleague here sounds like HR or is less jaded than me, but one thing they are correct about is that the valuation now will definitely be lower than when we IPO (hopefully soon) so it’s a great time to get in
This does sound like Airbnb HR type of response. @OP: the stock will undoubted rise so taking it now might be a good bet. Do a lot of research on the org/team you’d be joining because Airbnb only looks nice from the outside. The culture was anything but and it is not an engineering/DS driven culture. I would avoid as ex Airbnb...
Airbnb is a good long term play
Airbnb is a shit place to work as an eng but the stock is very undervalued atm. Negotiation will be in $ though so you don't need to know the price per unit.
really depends on team, as all workplaces, but definitely agree that the current price is a steal
If you join now your likely getting double the RSUs of people who joined over the last three years. I would go for it OP
They will tell you when you get offer letter. The value will depend on when you get the offer. If it’s in the next few weeks, it will likely be at the current 409a which is indeed low because the valuation was made at the worst point in the covid cycle, so you would get RSUs at a discount. If your offer is made after our S1 is public, who knows.
Why does the date of offer matter? Doesn't it depend on joining date instead?
It’s the best time to join Airbnb. Be greedy when other people are fear
Any fear of future layoffs?
Near future: absolutely not. Medium and far future: who the hell can predict anything anymore.
Good to know. Thanks!
Fam, thanks for all the helpful responses. I do have E5 offer from Facebook. So, I'm really confused.
Do you know for which team you have an offer at Airbnb (and at FB)? Some teams here are absolutely horrible, others quite solid, depending on your interests. FB is probably the same. Generally our culture and product’s benefit to society is a lot better, tech and technical leadership weaker. I’m a former Amazonian and am glad I made the switch because I disliked Amazon’s culture, career progression (OMG OLRs), and a lot of coworkers - so it was the right move. But I’m now experiencing the downsides of that choice - the negatives I listed - so huge YMMV. Depends on what you’re looking for. My advice is, if it’s a close call on most dimensions, to decide based on team and manager vs company as a whole.
@Airbnb I'm talking with the Community Support team and the Trust team, do you think that these teams are great? It's for a Seattle based position and I'm interested in Infra/ML
Given the uncertainty with the travel industry right now, you should think before making any move to Airbnb. I’ve seen quite a good folks let go from Airbnb few months ago.
