No real takeaways here… haven’t heard back yet (interview was on Friday) but I totally brain farted when I was asked which leadership principle spoke to me most. I wanted to say bias for action but ended up stammering about the leadership principle that involves actually doing… anyone can have ideas but I’m passionate about executing on them as well. Then when telling my stories I gapped and forgot to specifically call out points related to “obsession with customers”… mentioned quite a bit about relevant data points/prioritization/trade offs/etc but forgot key phrases like “identify the most valuable customer outcomes and build against those” and “measure success by revenue driven, which is directly correlated to measuring success at the customer level with these key metrics (insert metrics here), with an eye towards driving and measure habit formation with several iterations.” And like “new sales are a great barometer for interest, but habit formation is the gold standard for being able to reliably drive recurring revenue, as renewals are typically cheaper revenue than net new sales” Again, no real takeaways and I’m still crossing my fingers, but I think I got nervous and blew it =\ disappointed with myself
Are these actual words you used or paraphrasing? As an interviewer I’d ask follow up questions if key points were missing, can’t expect a monologue and it’s acceptable to be nervous. It’s all luck sometimes who you get.
Those quotes are the key phrases I FORGOT to say haha (I think I might have over prepared). It was a good back and forth conversation but I think I’m just in my head because I didn’t fully represent every single leadership principle in my stories, and I went over those quotes phrases in my prep ad nauseum>.< And like how TF did I forgot “bias for action”? Easily the shortest and easiest to remember leadership principle and I just could not come up with the words >.<
Ah try not to be so hard on yourself, I know it can be tough esp in this economy. At least you got the interview! Shows your resume is solid. If it helps, each interviewer is assigned 1-2 leadership principles and will dive deep into those, so you don’t need to cover every single one with each person.
When I used to interview a lot (been a while obviously) I was very averse to interviewees who recited to the word vs just telling me about their relevant experiences. Calling out leadership principles by name isn’t important as long as your stories align to them. Also asking you “what is your favorite leadership principle” is a horrible question not found in any training or recommended Qs. I imagine this was a pre screen with HR or you got unlucky with a bad interviewer.
It was the HM interview… I dunno if this is typical but a recruiter reached out to me, did an initial call, and then set up an interview with the HM. Good news though - I made it through to the panel! Got confirmation today, and they sent me the writing assessment and all. Thanks for your insight on this!
Good to hear that you moved forward. I would caution against trying to “say the right things” because ultimately you want to come across authentic. When you word vomit (eg that barometer example), fast follow with an example. Don’t just assume that saying something grand and high-level is enough.
Great callout - I agree with that point. That’s almost like the danger of over preparation haha… you just memorize stuff and spit it out without really digging deep
OP did you move forward? Just had my onsite today. Did the word vomit exactly how you described
Update?
Still in the mix - waiting on the final dates for my loop, but they sent the assessment and set up the pre-loop lead recruiter call
