Do I need active health insurance when I’ve COBRA option

Was in a PIP and eventually let go. I don’t have active health insurance but there’s an option to avail COBRA (it’s expensive) Considering I’ve the option to avail COBRA retroactively in case something goes wrong, can I skip getting coverage through my spouse’s insurance? Don’t want to add myself to my spouse’s plan as it will mess up deductible and I hope to find something soon.

No. Cobra is your health insurance. You just have to pay the premium and continue to enjoy the same health plan you elected for the year. You can try to find a cheaper healthcare and don’t pay cobra. But it’s not gonna be much cheaper and it’ll be a lot of hassle to sort out.

Coverage thru spouse’s work plan is cheaper than cobra.

But you just said you didn’t want to go for that option.

You don't get unlimited look back. It is 45 days only. You have to pay insurance retroactively. There is no free ride. Check if Obamacare works for you.

Some crap plan from Obamacare would likely be cheaper than Cobra but probably not by much. If you were going to shell out that much money might as well go for Cobra and get actual benefits in case you do fall sick.

You can claim unemployment. That’s probably 10k and more for the year.

Pip is layoff with cause which usually doesn’t qualify for unemployment benefits
