I was offered a job at Chevron with 50% pay increase. They offer 150k But they say i will work remotely till March of 2022, but then i have to relocate to some oilfield village. Appartment and food is free, since they paying for that. You will be living in dormitory in a single room yourself, but with shared bathroom (toilet, shower) And you get good food, + there are bars in that village , gym, cinema, etc. Overall there are over 30k people living there. Schedule: You work 1 whole month without weekends - 12 hours a day, but then you get 1 whole month off for yourself. So basically you won't spend any money there except going to bar. Is that a good option? anyone please. or should i keep my current remote job 5/2 (8 hours a day) with 100k instead of 150k
If you're single, yes. If you have an SO/children, no.
Tf is this
What kind of engineer? If SWE then it's a hard no. Also 30k is still relatively small for a town. You will get bored very quickly, especially if you don't mesh well with the locals.
It sounds like a movie. One month work, one month off. Trying different bars. Oh wait, you will have known all women and men in the small town.
would you take it?
If you are single and would like to find a good heart as SO, take it. That does not mean fk around. Big cities are not good for this.
If you’re single, yes. Worst case, give it a year, and if it sucks move on. But I’d save $$ like crazy during that time. So much you can do in a month with extra money in the bank. Can you refer me?
If you are young, this is the dream. Work one month, spend a month on the beach in mexico, go skiing, camping etc. Even with 12 hr days you have some downtime for sports etc.
No. Look at my company. Trust me you don't want this type of work for only 50pct increase.
why is that?
Crap lifestyle, terrible industry, awful job security. I work in RnD and knew guys who took 50k paycuts to get out of the field, single guys with no attachments, and they were lucky. Most folks can't make the transition. The lifestyle is way worse than it sounds and the money doesn't make up for it.
I knew a lot of engineers in the Oil and Gas space. From what I've heard, they really pamper you if things are going well but they are extremely risk adverse and things can get rough fast if there is any extended downturn.
so u think that oil and gas industry not worth it? what is your opinon on pharm industry?
It can be extremely worth it if you don't have a family and are a young guy going after money. But don't expect it to be a long term stable gig.
