Which large tech companies you think will last 20+ years?
I've been at Google for 5 months now (since May), the imposter syndrome is still here. The first three months, my team put me on a feature that a coworker held my hand through. Now I'm fixing bugs that don't really teach me about the system. Motivation to work through the day is not there. I feel like my team thinks I'm a lemon and I'm starting to feel like one. Any other Googlers felt the same way after 5 months? EDIT: Level: L3 Wow! Thank you for all the support, it really turned my day upside down. With so many people saying they feel the same way right now, I would like to start a group chat so that maybe we can support each other through Blind or maybe even beyond for those who feel comfortable. Message me and I will include you :) EDIT 2: Made the chat, feel free to join! https://us.teamblind.com/g/X2IR5dKoWj EDIT 3: Again thank you all for the support, we created a discord so that people who would like to to work together or even just hang out and support each other can do so. Feel free to join and invite others :) https://discord.gg/VWFdH2Z
I’m quite literally in the exact same scenario. Just not making that Google TC 😥
I feel a little jaded from trying to figure everything out on my own at home. Teammates say ask a lot of questions but it's too much friction to get someone on a call who I've never built a relationship with in person. I really took for granted being able to tap on people's shoulders and ask them if they have a second to look at my screen.
I have had issues with that as well. My team is really lacking in the documentation department, so I really think my greatest contributions thus far have been improving our knowledge repo. Basically any pain point I’ve had while onboarding, I’ve turned into new or updated docs. We have had a couple people join after me that really appreciated it.
Push through. It gets better.
Talk to your manager about what you’d like to work on
I talked to him about it, but honestly I'm still so unfamiliar with the system I don't feel very confident in asking for anything specific
If you work like that for the rest of year, considering your tc, goog may pip you. What’s your tc?
Why don’t you reach out to people and ask for help? Unless you work with jerks people will lend you a hand to get up to speed. In person or virtual, help is help! You are an adult and expected to solve your own problems. Seek help before it’s too late and you get punished for poor performance in your reviews.
Yeah this is true.
+1 People will start rolling eyes if you ask basic questions after 1 year which you should have been asking during ramp up (0 to 6 months IMO)
Same boat here
You’ll stop feeling this way after the first year
Haha just be miserable for a year, that's all 😂
Great things don't come easy
Stop thinking you have to know everything. Pick a piece that you can go deep on and get comfortable there before expanding scope.
This is good advice, I've got to keep this in mind
This! You are new, no one expects you to be a guru your first few months in. Especially when you are onboarding virtually. Ask questions and contribute where you can. I promise you are doing fine
Unfortunately, that’s what happens when you use leetcode to recruit SWE’s. They are good problem solvers but not grown up enough to solve real world engineering challenges on their own. Kudos to your courage to admit your “imposter syndrome”. Companies need to reinvent their hiring process so when someone is hired they don’t go through this hell of ramping up!
Disagree. Domain knowledge, company specific services are hard to get hold on in first few months. Leetcode argument shouldn't be applied here.
You are wrong DB! If I am a developer it doesn’t take me a while to grasp product architecture and the code base as I have worked on similar (not same) type of things before unless I am a new grad for which the expectations are very low and leetcode is perfect for them!
Same boat...
Lol lemon 😆
Also, You’re probably doing fine! Don’t overthink it.
Lemon?
